Detroit News blogger pushes "Dinesh D'Souza was targeted over politics" nonsense

by: Eric B.

Dinesh D'Souza faces prison time for illegally funnelling money to a New York Senate campaign. He wasn't convicted, mind you, but pled guilty to doing this. It's not a No Contest plea, which is accepting punishment without saying, "I am guilty." it's a guilty plea, which is accepting punishment while saying, "I did this."

Who is Dinesh D'Souza? Probably you and the president ask the same thing. The difference is that D'Souze spent half a year telling everyone that the only reason anyone was interested in what he was up to was because he criticized the president and not -- ya know -- because there was a credible reason to believe that he'd violated campaign finance laws.

Over the weekend, Detroit News civility scold Jeffrey Hadden found Reason 8,471 why he doesn't take it seriously when liberals say we should be nice to each other. It's because Democrats hate free speech. (Word for word, that's the headline.)

Democrats hate free speech.

In the past, I’ve referred to Democrats as the “Shut Up Party.”

In recent days in the U.S. Senate, Democrats again proved that description accurate. More than 40 Democratic senators have signed on to a proposed amendment that would gut the free speech and press protections of the current First Amendment.

What horrific crimes against free speech have Democrats committed? The petition that 40 of them signed was to call for an overturn of Citizens United and the McCutcheon rulings, the two that opened the spigots of cash into our politics. This isn't a curtailment of past free speech, mind you, but simply a re-examination of a new definition of what constitutes speech. He drapes this in the unfortunate support of both by the ACLU, an appeal to authority intended to make people who disagree look weird and extreme.

As a sign of how much Democrats hate free speech, D'Souza pled guilty to crimes.

The ACLU’s worries about selective prosecutions by partisan district attorneys are late. It’s already happened. Obama critic Dinesh D’Souza was hit with a federal criminal prosecution for illegally routing two $20,000 campaign donations through two friends. The 2008 Obama campaign itself nets a civil fine (in 2012) for failing to timely disclose and return $1.3 million in illegal donations.

Yes, the real victim in the entire sordid affair was Dinesh D'Souza, who we assume could have gone on violating what few campaign finance laws we have if only he hadn't criticized the president, the poor dear.

D'Souza should have been charged with aggravated stupidity (4.00 / 1)
The campaign cash that he illegally routed went to Wendy Long, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in New York State. Long lost to Senator Kirsten Gillenbrand by 46 points.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

D'Souza had more loyalty than brains (4.00 / 1)
He went to school with Wendy Long.

Of course, more loyalty than brains does make for a good conservative.

Greetings from Detroit, Ground Zero of the post-industrial future!
