MI-11: Skinner, Kumar Clarify National Party (DCCC) Endorsement Status

by: helzapoppn

(From the diaries! - promoted by Eric B.)

Joint Statement from the Campaigns of Dr. Anil Kumar and Nancy Skinner:

To all 11th District Democrats:

As candidates and more importantly, Democrats, we, Nancy Skinner and Dr. Anil Kumar, feel it is important to clarify the status of national party endorsements of the Michigan 11th District candidates, in order to create a transparent and accurate reflection of the race for Congress in the 11th.

Both of us have been told repeatedly by the DCCC [Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee] that the national party has not endorsed anyone in this race. Nancy had been called by the DCCC in March before she got in the race, and was told that although Bobby McKenzie was initially put on a "Jump Start" list, which no longer exists, he was never endorsed in the race. Dr. Kumar had been told this by the DCCC as well in a visit to [Washington], DC.

Only two Michigan candidates, Pam Byrnes [MI-07] and Jerry Cannon [MI-01], have been officially endorsed by the DCCC in their "Red-to-Blue" Program.

Patrick Brown, the Midwest Regional Manager for the DCCC, provided the following link on May 21st and verified by phone that nothing had changed and the link on the DCCC website is where they communicate the definitive status of candidates and what they are doing with each candidate, race and district. They have four categories and so far MI-11 is only an "Emerging District."

The following candidates were named to the Red to Blue program:

  • MI-01 - Jerry Cannon
  • MI-07 - Pam Byrnes

The following races were named Emerging Districts:

  • MI-11

Unfortunately, the McKenzie campaign has continued to claim to be the endorsed DCCC candidate, including a statement made by Bobby himself on Wednesday, May 21st, at the Troy Democratic Club, the same day the DCCC sent the link and confirmed by phone the status of MI-11 once again.

Bobby said "he has the 100% backing of the national party" and his campaign manager said [on May 20th] to the Waterford Dems that Bobby was “Exclusively Endorsed” by the DCCC. This has been repeated so often by members of the McKenzie campaign, that various Democratic clubs' members and some unions simply believed this to be true.

Perhaps that’s because the distinction was not made between being recruited and endorsed. The DCCC also recruited Rep. Dian Slavens and Jocelyn Benson after recruiting McKenzie. They want good candidates and try to recruit many; but their endorsement is different, and it should not be misconstrued as such in this race.

We believe that transparency and sunlight are imperative to the democratic process itself, and were encouraged to share the above link if there was confusion. We look forward to a healthy, positive Democratic primary moving forward. We will unify after the Primary, as all good Democrats do, and stand behind our candidate who emerges. And come November, MI-11 will become a Blue Seat on our map.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Sincerely, Dr. Anil Kumar and Nancy Skinner

There is a perception, even among people who are active in 11th District politics, that the national party has endorsed McKenzie. Obviously McKenzie himself is helping perpetuate this.

Mrs. Dudgeon has gotten a barrage of emails from the McKenzie campaign, all of which sound like they were written by a high school pep squad. We deserve better than that.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

Joe Trippi (@JoeTrippi) tweeted this....

Full Disclosure: Trippi -- one of the nation's best-known Democratic political consultants having worked on campaigns for 30+ years -- is now the National Coordinator with Skinner for Congress.

What exactly does a "National Coordinator"
Do for a Congressional campaign?

Not a whole helluva lot, it turns out...
...With full benefit of hindsight, Joe Trippi didn't do shit for us -- probably because we couldn't truly afford his services.

Had Nancy won the Primary, then maybe we would have had Trippi's full attention.

I'm surprised he was available
Maybe his consulting contract with Bahrain ran out.

Considering that was three years ago...
...I'm surprised you're surprised.
