Detroit's infant mortality is a very serious problem, so naturally we're cutting money for it

I am Jack's sense of misplaced values.

Lansing — A legislative budget committee on Tuesday eliminated $6.5 million for efforts to reduce infant mortality at Hutzel Women’s Hospital in Detroit under a $16.5 billion spending plan for the state Department of Community Health.

The Detroit Medical Center has lobbied hard for the continued state assistance, which has been used for a decade to draw about $13.5 million in federal funding for a one-of-a-kind research and treatment program for premature babies born to Detroit mothers.

I feel like this was just in the news, like maybe that Detroit's infant mortality rate was being described as Third World in scope. Yeah, yeah ... the Detroit News even noticed, and editorialized not for greater access to health care or prenatal care but against co-sleeping. Naturally, the place we'd want to cut spending is for programs aimed at reducing infant mortality in our hospitals.

Don't you know?
The problem with all these gummint programs is they waste too much money. Give them less and they will do more. This is how Republicans deal with every problem, from poverty to unemployment to education--cut spending, then ignore the problem and declare that it has been solved.

If that fails, cut taxes.

Budget Comm. jerks
Let's see, 6.5 M plus 13.5 M equals 20 M. That kind of loss should enable Hutzel to really, really do a better job. The clowns who are pushing this are nothing more than a bunch of simple-mined, racist bastards.
