Nobody (but Graham Davis) cares about debates, so stop pretending that they're important

We're getting into the terrible-est part of campaign season, which is the summer, which means that aaaaaaany second now we can expect to start seeing coverage of the matter of how many debates each candidate will agree to participate in and then both sides will try to spin the outcome as either the other side is chicken or doesn't care about the electorate or is just showboating to impress voters. Media outlets will start scolding candidates for not agreeing to do 12 debates on the grounds that the public has a right to know what candidates think (these same outlets will devote reporting resources to talking about ad campaigns but zero resources to figuring out whether the candiates are talking about are good ideas or loony tunes). And, when people do debate ... no one will pay any attention except the campaigns themselves, who will hope that the other side says something unscripted and stupid so they can put it into an attack ad.

In other words, they are pointless anachronisms with very little value and lots of sound reasons to avoid them like the plague. So, what say Grand Rapids Press we stop pretending that a decision to not do any debates is not a rational, well-reasoned choice and not a crime against democracy, because no one cares.
