Peters up in latest poll, making him an underdog to win the open Senate seat

by: Eric B.

Thu Jun 12, 2014 at 12:52:40 PM EDT

MIRS reported the latest poll on the Senate race yesterday. This is the part I read, lifted from a Peters press release.

MIRS - New Mitchell Poll: Peters Up 3%: In the U.S. Senate race, Peters is much stronger with women than men and has solidified his Democratic base more than Land has solidified her GOP base, Mitchell said. Maybe more importantly, Peters has a 7 percent lead with independents. [MIRS, 6/11/14]

So, he's ahead and solidifying his support in his core constituencies and with independents. Look for the national media to recognize this by listing the race as "Tilt Republican" and talk about what a strong candidate Terri Lynn Land is.

Must be up by ~10, then
If Mitchell says Peters is up 3, then he's probably up by much more than that.

Josh Pugh (before his MDP days, IIRC) retweeted a bunch of old tweets in which Mitchell basically said that Romney was going to beat Obama in Michigan, among other Republican triumphs that never materialized. Josh topped that off by saying, "Steve Mitchell, ladies and gentlemen!" It was one of the best examples of pollster ass-kickery I've seen in quite some time.

Also worth noting: While Peters leads indies by 7, Romney and Obama basically tied among Michigan independents in 2012.
