And, as if by magic, Michigan's roads repaired themselves

Our ongoing experiment in the Dunning-Kruger effect, everyone.

LANSING — Michigan lawmakers adjourned Thursday without the big fix for roads that Gov. Rick Snyder has advocated for more than two years and motorists are clamoring for as they traverse the state’s pothole-scarred roads.

The Senate tried one final time to pass a revenue-neutral tax Thursday evening, which they said would have set the table for more work on the issue over the summer and fall, but fell three votes short.

Republicans tried to put the best face on the impasse, saying it was “Not that big a deal,” according to Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville, R-Monroe.

I look forward to everyone explaining how this is an example of steely leadership by our benevolent overlord Rick Michigan, who made a permanent fix to the road situation one of his priorities.

Then, there's these guys.

And because tea party ideologues who oppose any tax hike for any purpose control a critical mass of those safe Republican seats, Michigan’s Republican governor and Senate majority leader were unable to muster Republican legislators’ support for the comprehensive road fix Michigan voters demand.

This isn't really a matter of ideology. It's a matter of basic competence, really. It's okay, easy, and fun to rail constantly on Tea Party ideologues, but this is a matter of lawmakers simply not doing their jobs.

Pothole Pat Colbeck has the magic solution
At a Republican issues forum in Canton, Colbeck told the audience that "I've been pretty passionate about finding a way to fix our roads without raising taxes."

Colbeck's magic fairy-dust alternative?

Those would include, Colbeck said, cost-saving efficiencies in the Michigan Department of Transportation, roads that are built to last longer and are less costly to maintain and programs for generating revenue such as rest-stop concessions, highway billboards and the sale of naming rights.

Naming rights. I can hardly wait to pull into the Northern Bath Tissue/Sani-Flush Rest area on I-75 on my way north.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

Well ...
I'm with him as far as "roads that are built to last longer and are less costly to maintain". It's entirely possible to build roads that don't crumble as fast as Michigan's in cold environments. I understand the Europeans do it all the time. Only problem is that's a long-run savings. Try to implement it with the present revenue into the road fund and the number of miles of road that can be rebuilt per year will be slashed.

Pat, baby, sometimes you gotta invest to get a return later, y'know?

Shh, don't mention "Europe".
Use that word, and people like Colbeck will do the exact opposite, even if it means building roads out of Canada goose droppings with 15 coats of toxic paint on top of them.

Math challenged...
So Colbeck will find a few billion to fix the roads by putting Mickey D's in every rest stop? And making those lazy road workers quit wasting money?

One of these days the voters are going to wise up... aren't they?

It kills me that they keep using blacktop!
It kills me that they keep using black top. They wouldn't need to repair the roads every other year if they built the roads with better materiel.

Time and time again I see them re~blacktop a road and by the next summer its already started getting potholes. Yet the few roads that are cement like Telegraph last forever.

We wouldn't need such a huge budget to repair the roads if they did it right the first time!
