The slash to your wrist is supposed to go vertical, not horizontal

by: Eric B.

Mon Jun 16, 2014 at 13:00:00 PM EDT

This is why we can't have nice things.

You had all sorts of crosswinds in this debate, including the tea party ouster of U.S. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor.

How did that vote in Virginia affect a road vote in Michigan?

Sen. Jack Brandenburg, R-Macomb County, believes it made some Republicans sitting on the fence think twice about voting yes. The tea party victory showed “anyone can be beaten at any time.”

If you voted against money for roads because Eric Cantor lost the least of your problems is whether you can withstand a Tea Party challenge.

Emotion trumps logic (4.00 / 1)
If you have any doubts that emotion trumps logic, look at how the Cantor loss is being treated.

He ran a horrible campaign. By all accounts, he ignored his constituents. He may have also been on the wrong end of a cross-over effort by Democrats. He was also unpopular in his district, whereas most members of Congress are at least somewhat well-liked in their district.

At least on a national level, only two Republican incumbents - Cantor and Ralph Hall (TX) - have lost their primaries.

Eric Cantor was the exception, not the rule.

And yet, Republicans are afraid of being beat - just because a universally hated guy lost after running a lousy campaign.

Excuses, excuses... (0.00 / 0)
They aren't doing their jobs because they are really bad at doing their jobs. When you've got Randy Richardson saying fixing our crumbling roads is "no big deal", it seems to me the problem is not fear that a primary loss in VA means they're doomed if they raise taxes. This is, after all, the same bunch who had no problem raising taxes on retirees, families, and the working poor.

I think they are simply too incompetent to get a deal done that involves actually bargaining with Democrats.
