Private/public employers file amicus brief for gay marriage; oral arguments set for Aug. 6

by: Eric B.

Tue Jun 17, 2014 at 10:36:47 AM EDT

Last night, East Lansing mayor Nathan Triplette posted to Facebook that a group of private and public employers had filed an amicus brief in support of the courts striking down Michigan's same sex marriage ban with the 6th Appeals Court. I'm a gonna try to figure out how to upload it and share, but the internal upload is taking a billion years. The reason why Triplette posted this is that East Lansing was one of three Michigan cities to sign on. The other two were Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor. All three of them, it should be noted, are university towns, although this sets up this argument as cities versus the state. The Ypsi Downtown Development Authority also signed on, heightening that this isn't just a matter of social justice, but a matter of economic development.

Meanwhile, oral arguments have been set for for Aug. 6? How much taxpayer money will this cost? How much taxpayer money has already been spent defending this? Inquiring minds would like to know.

Update! ... There were three amicus briefs filed yesterday, and the good people at Equality Michigan were kind enough to put them on the Internet where you can read them for yourself. There was the one from employers. There is also one from the clergy. And, one signed by Republicans.

The Republican brief (4.00 / 1)
The Republican brief is signed by, among others, fourteen former members of the legislature including former Speaker Rick Johnson, former Majority Leader Christopher Ward, Joe Schwarz, Patricia Godchaux and Leon Drolet. Not a single current Republican legislator or candidate for office, of course.

Funny! (4.00 / 1)
A bunch of Republicans -- large and small businesses -- and members of the clergy -- all lined up against: today's Republican elected officials.
