Today in campaign news: AFT endorses Virgil Smith

by: Eric B.

Wed Jun 25, 2014 at 15:00:00 PM EDT

*--Virgil Smith's campaign has announced that the AFT dual-endorsed in the 4th Senate District race. Both he and Rashida Tlaib, that is. Smith's campaign today also announced that it has been endorsed by the Michigan AFL-CIO and the IBEW, and that in the past it has been endorsed by the UAW, the Teamsters Joint Council, AFSCME, the Michigan Association of Police Organizations, the carpenters and millwrights and the building trades people.

*--Bobby McKenzie's campaign announced earlier today that it has locked down the crucial, crucial support of the Seafarers International Union. In this landlocked district, two words: Land legs.

*--Warren Evans has picked up the endorsements of UNITE HERE and the Independent Business Association.

The Seafarers' endorsement of McKenzie is the tip of the proverbial iceberg (4.00 / 1)
I've been told that he's about to be endorsed by the Cordwainers, the Fishmongers, the Hackney Carriage Drivers, and the Scriveners.

However, it appears that the Tallow Chandlers won't make an endorsement this election cycle.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

Once the Breechesmakers endorse, it's over (nt) (0.00 / 0)

No word from the Unicyclists Local, either.

Really, though, (0.00 / 0)
I do believe it is a sign of my getting older that I'm becoming desensitized to these endorsement announcements.

Coming eventually: Endorsement Stratego (4.00 / 1)
I'm in the process of developing criteria rating endorsements as if they are game pieces in Stratego. Some of them carry actual weight, like Emily's List, because it either means volunteers or money. Some are just things that when published gets a candidate's name out in the daily news cycle ... for what that's worth.

The Seafarers' endorsement is probably a Scout, a 9.

It has been too long since I've played actual Stratego (0.00 / 0)
Brings back great childhood memories of games with my father.

To your point, there was this quote from Ballenger in the Free Press article that was interesting:

"Before Clarke got in to the race, I think it was Brenda Lawrence's race to lose," said Bill Ballenger, editor of the political newsletter Inside Michigan Politics. "But I'm not convinced that Hansen has the advantage. He's such a strange duck, and he hasn't organized at all.

"I'm also just amazed at the Rudy Hobbs thing," he added. "He's gotten every endorsement in sight, from major politicians and unions, and it's almost like they're doubling down, saying, 'We don't care if he doesn't have a chance, we're going to push him over the top.' "

Stratego. Haven't played that in eons. (0.00 / 0)
Speaking of which, the Schauer campaign caught a spy who was working on behalf of Governor Snyder.

Of course, the Terry Lynn Land "Really?" ad was a bomb.
