Yesterday's Hobby Lobby ruling: How it empowered scientific ignorance

by: Eric B.

Tue Jul 01, 2014 at 14:00:00 PM EDT

Other people -- all over the place -- were all over yesterday's terrible SCOTUS ruling on Hobby Lobby. Nancy Kaffer at the Freep hits a mostly unexplored angle: We are watching the United States become stupider by the day.

The court’s ruling is predicated on the belief — in fact, accepts without question — that coverage of IUDs and emergency contraception violates the business owners’ moral code.

The problem is, that’s not what the preponderance of medical evidence tells us about how IUDs and emergency contraception work.

Kaffer works for the Freep, which means she has to be sort of nice about this sort of thing. I don't work for the Freep and don't aspire to, so I can lay it out plainly: The idea that IUDs and contraceptives abort life is cockamamie. You'd have to know exactly zero about contraceptives and how human life develops to think this. You'd also have to hold the overly simplistic, hubris-driven belief that life begins at conception rather than having started billions of years ago and that individual organisms are fairly meaningless in its carrying on.

It's driven by ignorance, and it is now given sanction by the Supreme Court as governing a matter of public health. Go us.

Today the Supreme Court addressed that problem (4.00 / 1)
It let stand a number of lower court decisions involving the contraception mandate. Basically, an employer can opt out of all contraceptive coverage, not just the methods the self-appointed medical experts at Hobby Lobby declared abortifacients.

If there was any doubt that the right wing's ultimate goal is to overrule Griswold v. Connecticut, the Court's recent actions ought to eliminate it.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

I recall (4.00 / 1)
many years ago, reading an interview with a RTL spokesperson, who was asked what they would do if they got abortion prohibited, and he said, "we'll go after birth control".

The sanctity of life (4.00 / 1)
is not the issue.

If Hobby Lobby's owners were concerned with the sanctity of life, their stores would not be full of goods from a country that has a policy of forced abortion, and uses child labor. Nor would their pension plan invest in the same companies that make the very drugs they object so strongly to.

The issue is of course their desire to punish women for having sex without procreation, and to take away their right to control their own bodies. This is yet another in the long list of reasons to decouple health insurance from employment, and go to a single payer system.
