Today in campaign news: Lil' Fella gets caught making stuff up

by: Eric B.

Wed Jul 09, 2014 at 15:42:16 PM EDT

*--I'm not sure if the Washington Post's coverage of this will sway many Michigan voters, but they called out Lil' Fella for lying about his conservative street cred.

*--Nancy Skinner, who is running for the Democratic nomination in the 11th District, has gotten some attention the last week for his campaign platform that leans heavily on climate change. And, by attention, I'm not talking just about Democrats and progressives, but climate scientists. I saw this link this morning via the Twitter account of climate scientist Michael Mann. It goes to a piece written by Peter Sinclair, who did the Climate Change Denier Crock of the Week series. Unfortnately for Skinner, neither Sinclair nor Mann live in this district.

*--The campaign for Andy Helmboldt for 62nd House has announced that it has been endorsed by the Millwrights and Carpenters.

*--Lisa Brown, Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor, will be in Kalamazoo tomorrow night to headline a fund raiser for pro-equality candidates.

They may not live in the 11th District, (4.00 / 2)
but there's this thing called the Internet that allows folks in the 11th District to read what they write.

Paul Clements is taking on Rep. Fred Upton in the 6th. Fred is Chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, so he gets to block good environmental legislation. Paul also has climate change as one of his signature issues. I'm trying to have Peter Sinclair do a follow-on, pointing out that Skinner is not the only climate champion running in Michigan.

Are people reading it, that's the question (4.00 / 1)
From my perspective, Bobby McKenzie has wrapped up a lot of endorsements ... not that it'll necessarily do him any good. But, Nancy Skinner -- as far as I can tell -- doesn't have much of a footprint aside from posting stuff to social media and getting this sort of notice. I don't live in the district, so I could be off base. But, it's interesting that Michael Mann of all people took notice of Nancy Skinner's campaign.

I live in the 11th, and here's what I've seen and heard (4.00 / 1)
McKenzie's campaign has called our home half a dozen times in the past three weeks--even though both Mrs. Dudgeon and I told the person who called that Bobby is our next-to-last choice ahead of the LaRouchie.

We've gotten more direct mail from Dr. Kumar than any other congressional candidate. I've also seen Kumar ads on multiple websites I've visited. He's even with McKenzie in yard signs.

I've seen no evidence of the Skinner campaign aside from a Daily Kos diary she put up and a story in one of the local papers about her being endorsed by the MDP's Justice Caucus.

I'm one of the few people who recognizes who Michael Mann is, and his endorsement makes me favor Skinner in the primary. However, I might end up casting a tactical vote for Kumar because I hold McKenzie in such low regard.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

I'm seeing Kumar's ads too (0.00 / 0)
...and I'm on the west side of the state.

Anyone who knows much about digital advertising knows that you can target based on geography (i.e. by ZIP code, city, etc.). Kumar's ads need much better targeting - otherwise, he's just wasting money.

If each of you did tell McKenzie's staffer/volunteer that, I'd think they would take note of that and stop wasting their time.

Any signs of a field operation from Skinner? If she doesn't have one, she's all but doomed. It did appear that the chair of a certain other congressional district party (not the 11th, but another one) is supporting Skinner - interesting, to be sure.

Now on Great Lakes, Great Times, Great Scott: McCann (D) seeking recount for state Senate in Kalamazoo County

Hey, Hy ---- (0.00 / 0)
Do you happen to have a link to the story about Skinner being endorsed by the Justice Caucus?

I happen to serve on the Justice Caucus Board, and the JC Non-judicial Endorsement Committee. The Justice Caucus DOES NOT endorse in Federal races. Period. Therefore, we have not endorsed Nancy Skinner.

I have nothing against Nancy Skinner, in fact anyone who makes climate change a salient issue makes me happy. Just curious as to what the source for that story might be.

Never mind, I found it -- (4.00 / 1)
http://plymouth-mi.patch.com/g...

Earlier, Skinner was endorsed by Paul Stevenson, Chairman of the MDP Justice Caucus; ...

Paul is cited as Chair of the Justice Caucus just for identification. This is not the same as endorsement by the Caucus.

My bad. I hadn't read the Patch article carefully enough (0.00 / 0)
By the way, I highly recommend Michael Mann's The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars. It's written by a man who had a front-row seat to watch the viciousness of the climate-change deniers on the right.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.
