Dewey defeats Truman: Virgil Smith declared winner after media declares Tlaib winner

by: Eric B.

Wed Aug 06, 2014 at 09:00:24 AM EDT

The big news coming out of last night was going to be that Rashida Tlaib had beaten Virgil Smith in the 4th Senate District race, until this happened.

In the 4th state Senate district, after initially delaring state Rep. Rashida Tlaib the winner over incumbent state Sen. Virgil Smith, D-Detroit, by a margin of nearly 400 votes, the Associated Press withdrew its numbers and reported Smith had won the race by a 51.5% to 40.8% margin. Howard Worthy, a Detroit Democrat rounded out the race with 7.7% of the vote.

We reported it here, too, based on someone else's projection.

Meanwhile, when I went to bed Brenda Lawrence had a very small lead in the 14th Congressional District and most precincts reporting. Then, this morning I awoke to Teh Social Medias telling me that Rudy Hobbs had won. Can't find anything more definitive than this.

With all the precincts reporting in the 14th Congressional District, it appears Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence has an edge over state Rep. Rudy Hobbs by nearly 2,500 votes to replace U.S. Rep. Gary Peters.

But the prospect of a possible recount loomed. A recount can be requested if a candidate suspects the votes are incorrect because of possible “fraud or mistake” and identifies the precincts that should be retallied, according to state law. The Board of State Canvassers would do any recount.

Earlier, a spokesman for the Hobbs camp said he believed Hobbs had won.

Maybe I missed something or maybe it's that most of my friends were behind Hobbs and the idea was to recreate a little magic from 2000, when the media picked up on the idea that George Bush II had won Florida and that lying, flip-flopper Al Gore was being a sore loser.

Looks like Lawrence wins (0.00 / 0)
26,400 to 24,007, per the Free Press and the Bureau of Elections.

Now on Great Lakes, Great Times, Great Scott: The Grand Rapids Press, which rarely endorses Democrats, backs Winnie Brinks

Brenda Lawrence Wins! (4.00 / 2)
Michigan - 386 of 386 Precincts Reporting - 100%

Lawrence, Brenda Dem 26,500 36%
Hobbs, Rudy Dem 24,007 32%
Clarke, Hansen Dem 22,869 31%
Foster, Burgess Dem 830 1%

The celebration last night was amazing. The mood was hopeful, but uncertain for most of the duration. As the percent reporting kept going up and her lead was holding, though, the excitement kept growing.

Brenda Lawrence gave her victory speech after the clerks reported the results and Rudy Hobbs had called to concede. She gave a powerful speech. The room was electrified!

In the end, Brenda Lawrence won both Oakland County AND Wayne County. She carried Detroit (!), Southfield, Pontiac, Oak Park and Royal Oak Township. There may be others, too, but I haven't seen municipality-specific results for Wayne County yet.

One takeaway from this congressional race: Just because one campaign claims to have walked more doors and made more phone calls (and supposedly outworked) doesn't make it so.

Every time the other campaign would tout their number of doors and phone calls as unsurpassed and a reason why they should be nominated, we'd look at our numbers from the doors and phones, shrug at their false presumption, and pound the pavement with even more resolve.

I mean, we're talking upwards of triple the number of phone calls and doors. I've never seen anything like the field operation of the Brenda Lawrence for Congress campaign.

Another takeaway from this congressional race: Chris Jensen is an amazing talent and she deserves high praise for all of her skilled efforts as Campaign Manager.

Great Lakes, Great Times.
