Lil' Fella champions district by torching everyone around him

by: Eric B.

Thu Aug 07, 2014 at 09:38:58 AM EDT

By now, everyone's probably seen Lil' Fella's victory speech from Tuesday night in which he demanded an apology from Brian Ellis and then called Pete Hoekstra a loser or something. It's making the rounds.

“To Brian Ellis, you owe my family and this community an apology for your disgusting, despicable smear campaign,” Amash added. “You had the audacity to try to call me today after running a campaign that was called the nastiest in the country."

The congressman also took a dig at former Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-MI), who campaigned for Ellis.

"I want to say to lobbyist Pete Hoekstra, you're a disgrace," Amash said. "I'm glad we can hand you one more loss before you fade into total obscurity and irrelevance."

Remember, this is the Pete Hoekstra who was generally considered one of the most genial members of the Republican delegation to Congress when he served.

As for Lil' Fella, if I lived in his district, I'd be mad as hell about this. For a guy who says that he's all about serving his district, he's managed to alienate the entire thing in one fell swoop. Grand Rapids wants anything from the federal government any time soon? They're going to have to overcome the hurdle that is their Congressman verbally flipping off all of his colleagues and generally sending a message that politics to him is scorched earth warfare.

By the way, for the second straight time, Lil' Fella pulled down the endorsement of the Grand Rapids Press, not because he's an effective lawmaker who works well to get things accomplished for the betterment of the state and community but partially in hopes that he develop better skills at working with others. After this, they might wish to reconsider their endorsement.

The Press tore into him today (4.00 / 1)
This is awesome:

During an endorsement interview with our editorial board prior to the election, Amash mentioned that, one day, he would like to be Speaker of the House.

To attain that spot, Amash would need to wend his way through the ranks of leadership, a process that would surely involve confronting criticisms and misleading claims like those he endured during this race.

If he wants to have any kind of influence or clout beyond his position now, he must learn to act like a statesman. Achieving a spot in leadership would open him up to far harsher critiques than those in the ads Ellis ran.

Always worth noting when the Press goes after a Republican - the same paper endorsed Pete Hoekstra and Mike Bouchard for Senate against Stabenow. They almost never endorse a Democrat unless the race is a foregone conclusion (i.e. they endorsed Levin the last couple times he ran).

As a Democrat, I'm enjoying watching the other side go after each other.

That said, there's no defense for him not to take Ellis's call.

To think that the GR area used to be represented by the likes of Gerald Ford and Paul Henry...

RINOs, I am sure.

40th anniversary (0.00 / 0)
The irony is, this week also marks the 40th anniversary of when a former holder of this seat became chief executive.

Speaking of RINOs, I distinctly remember how some of the same folks who always supported Vern Ehlers quickly suggested in 2010 that it was time for him to retire, because he just wasn't wacky enough.

Republican Realignment (0.00 / 0)
The list of Michigan Republicans of the past who would clearly struggle to win a party nomination in the 21st Century is endless....Bill Milliken, Jim Brickley, Elly Peterson, Betty Weaver, Carl Purcell, Marv Esch, Paul Henry, Vern Ehlers, Don Riegle, Phil Ruppe, Bill Broomfield...and those are just the statewide and Congressional level. And for that matter, would the views of the post-presidency Gerald Ford have been able to win a party nod in CD 3 today?

He has only one constituent . . (4.00 / 3)
. . and his name is DeVos. Whose brother-in-law owns a private army/freikorps of paid killers, so watch your mouth.

Ellis (4.00 / 1)
Ellis ran a really bizarre and nasty campaign against Amash.  Though, I do not buy for a minute the convention wisdom that the whole "Al Qaeda's Best Friend" line that everyone seems so stuck up about was meant as some kind of racist/xenophobic attack on Amash because he happens to be Arab American.  As a Dem with no horse in that race, I was just looking at it objectively and found Ellis' campaign to be totally tone-deaf.

But, Amash showed just who he is the other night: a petulant, thin-skinned man-child with a bite much, much bigger than his bite, a man with eyes bigger than his stomach.  No class, no grace and full of ego.  This win will only make him more of a head-case.  The crap he said was as disgusting as anything flung against him during the campaign.

If it is this easy to get under his skin, he's going nowhere fast.  I know his Democratic opponent in the general doesn't really have much of a chance, but Amash is just the kind of guy who if you needle him the right way could totally spin out of control and self-destruct his campaign.  I don't know when it's going to happen, it may be years off.  But, it is going to happen.  If I were Bob Goodrich, I'd totally try to knock Amash off balance and get him to respond disproportionally to some tiny slight.  It's just crazy enough that it might work.

Amash really revealed his weakness the other night in a way he hadn't quite before.  His arrogance and paper-thin skin will be his downfall, you just watch.  Justin is in a red district, but it's not that read that he can continue to act with impugnity and hope that no one notices.  Eventually, his sh%tty little attitude is going to catch up with him, and then even his rabid disciples won't be able to save his political career.

Speaker of the House? lol  He's more delusional than I thought.

Wow... (0.00 / 0)
What a whiny, immature little asshole. I'm sure his colleagues are impressed with his graciousness and class.
