Today in campaign news: Snyder's Katrina?

by: ScottyUrb

Wed Aug 13, 2014 at 20:31:18 PM EDT

*-- Since when is damage to your vacation house anything like having your only home flooded? Since this morning, apparently.

"I've been through a lot of things like that, Frank," Snyder said on WJR. "We just recently had holes in our roof from storm damage to our lake house. We have a vacation place, and we had a limb come down, put holes in the roof and had water running through the whole place. Those experiences are not pleasant ones."

Should be worth noting that in addition to his lake home and his place in Ann Arbor, he's got a mansion on the Grand River in Lansing and a cottage on Mackinac Island. Granted, he'll be losing the latter two on New Year's, but still.

*-- Michigan's unemployment rate jumped from 7.5% to 7.7% - a contrast to the national figures which show that June had the highest percentages of job openings since 2001.

*-- The wolf hunt thing passed the Senate today.

Not to mention (4.00 / 1)
All the state employees that will be laid off when that 1 1/2 billion dollar hole hits the state budget.  Wonder how high that will drive unemployment?

Ugh (4.00 / 2)
The whole wolf hunt thing just seems so petty to me.  While I wouldn't consider myself in the PETA wing of the party, my general feeling is that we probably don't need to keep adding animals to kill for sport the myriad of animals we're already allowed to kill for sport.

You'd think, then, that the legislature, which has so many other pet issues on its hand along with other state-wide issues, would kind of just defer to the people really most passionate about this (i.e. the environmentalist).  Instead, they've become so petty they are coming back to Lansing in the heart of summer to stick it to those passionate about this issue, and really for no other legitimate reason.  This is so damned petty.

They can come back to vote on something to allow folks to kill more wolves, but they can't come back to vote on a road funding fix?  Really, it's like they want to lose in November.  They'll keep the Senate, but they are increasingly looking at the possibility of a Dem House and Dem governor, again.  Is this the hill they want to die on?  Really?  A sadistic wolf hunt?

It's the Politics of F*** You... (4.00 / 2)
A lot of the time, it seems their whole purpose for being in Lansing is to find ways to say "F*** You!" to various Democratic interests.  That, and I think Tom Casperson is angling to be Michigan's version of Don Young -- quite successfully.

The Republicans ought to erect a statue an extended middle finger on the grounds of the State Capitol.

Don't hate the player, hate the middle finger that's now pointing at your house from your jilted lover's back patio.

Alan Markovitz recently moved in to a home in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., next door to his ex-wife. He then proceeded to erect this bronze statue in her -- and her new boyfriend's -- honor:

It's here, if you want to see it.

They're making it (4.00 / 2)
a big deal because it's something they can do that requires no real work. There's no funding to line up, they get to ignore their opponents, there's really no complex legal issue, and it makes their base happy. In contrast, road funding is a hugely complex and divisive issue that will require hard decisions and real work.

It's pure laziness, and fear of pissing off their base in an election year.

"Oh, and it's hard to find good help these days.ALWAYS too much starch."

the unemployment rate in michigan is at least 20% (0.00 / 0)
it is about 40% for Michigan youth.

America either revives its industrial base or it dies. There is no future for people in a post industrial America.

Governor Snyder has a keen grasp of the obvious (0.00 / 0)
While touring the flood damage in Greater Detroit, he offered this gem of wisdom: "If we get more rain, we could get more problems." You think?

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.
