Biography:
Tony Stamas represents the counties of Alcona, Alpena, Crawford,
Gladwin, Iosco, Midland, Montmorency, Ogemaw, Oscoda and Otsego as
Senator of the 36th District.
Stamas serves as the Vice Chair on Appropriations, and Chair of the
Department of Community Heath Appropriations Subcommittee.
Stamas’ other appropriations committees include State Police &
Military Affairs, Department of Transportation, and Community
Colleges. Senator Stamas is a member of the Senate Banking and
Financial Institutions Committee and the Committee on Senior Citizens
and Veterans Affairs.
Before being elected to the Michigan State Senate, Tony Stamas served
two terms as State Representative of the 98th District where he served
on the House Appropriations Committee as chair of Community Colleges
subcommittee and vice chair of the Capital Outlay subcommittee.
He also served on the Retirement and School Aid/K-12 subcommittees.
Stamas served as a Midland County Commissioner prior to being a member
of the House of Representatives, from 1991 to 1998. He served two
years as the chair of the commission. Tony Stamas is a former
district director for state Senator Bill Schuette, and works closely
with his family’s small business in downtown Midland.
Stamas earned an undergraduate degree in communications from Michigan
State University in 1988. He is a lifelong resident of Midland
County, and he and his wife, Sara, are members of the Messiah Lutheran
Church. He is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Leadership
Midland, the Jaycees and the Michigan Farm Bureau. Also, Tony
Stamas is a former member of the Midland/Gladwin County Mental Health
Board.
