DeVos Front Company Owns Big Share In Abusive Nursing Homes

by: gandergardener

Sun Sep 24, 2006 at 19:52:34 PM EDT

(Here is the nursing home issue the Governor just mentioned - promoted by matt)

I went looking into DeVos' limited (very limited) campaign financial disclosure listing all his holdings and donations. Among others, I took "RDV Corp" to Google, and found out some...interesting things.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, RDV Corp is the "investment vehicle for the DeVos family" that owns a significant stake in a company called Alterra.

Alterra recently went through bankruptcy, so I guess it wasn't a very good investment, but it's a BAD investment for some pretty horrifying reasons. Alterra is in the nursing home business, and that business has been skirting federal laws and cutting corners for years. According to the SEC, DeVos has $173 million invested in this company.

Now, this was funny when Homer threatened to put Grandpa Simpson "in the crooked home we saw on 60 minutes" but this is NOT funny.
Read this USA Today article "Sexual assaults haunt families of elderly victims" if you can stomach it. Among the abuse there was at least one death due to abuse and neglect, which was not reported to the authorities.

You can follow these links. Just to be clear: I draw no conclusions, I just followed the money. The facts should speak for themselves.

DeVos Owned this Abusive Nursing Home Company? (4.00 / 2)
Not an expert on business holdings, but it appears according to this document from the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Amway Guy himself, Richard M. DeVos, Jr., and not just some front group owned 40% of this company.

If DeVos owned 40% and his family controlled most of the rest of this company, is this just more evidence of DeVos mismanagement to undermine false claims that he is a "successful" businessman?

Wow, if this is true, great find both of you!

Check out my mediocre blog.

Alterra (0.00 / 0)
Thanks for exposing all this about Alterra.  I knew about the investment and the company's bankruptcy, but not the reason for it--appears they may have been trying to protect themselves against the lawsuits.  Your work also brings up the name of Jerry Tubergen for the first time.  He has managed the DeVos families investments for some time and his name is seen in some capacity on many of their companies and partnerships.  For example, he is president of RDV [Rich DeVos] Corp., the main vehicle for family investments.  Take a look at all the RDV outfits registered at the state at http://www.dleg.stat....  And that is only the beginning, since not all their investments are named RDV something!

DeVos Senior Plan Cynical Innoculation? (4.00 / 1)
So last week the Dick announces a senior citizen agenda or plan and now we find out he owned nursing homes where seniors were abused? Clearly the Dick's senior plan is nothing but a cynical effort to innoculate himself against his own record. Next we will learn that the Dick helped finance Bush's effort to abolish Social Security. What a cynic! Will Michigan's mainstream media have the testicles to report this story or will it just let the Dick whine that people are picking on him? I can just see the pouty Dick with his hands on hips declaring that he "just about had enough of this---again."

Apparently Dick DeVos Cannot Be Trusted (0.00 / 0)
Just last week Dick DeVos (R-Amway) said:

"Our seniors deserve to be treated with honor and dignity because they continue to make significant contributions to our great state," DeVos said. "We must do more to give back. We must ensure the services we have for seniors are both affordable and of high quality. And above all else, we must do a better job of protecting our most vulnerable citizens."

. . .

"In a DeVos administration senior citizens will be a priority. As governor, I will be committed to meeting the needs of Michigan's senior citizens and working to ensure they live a life of dignity."

Really?  Was that the case at Alterra?

Looks like another example of Dick DeVos saying one thing, but doing another.  No wonder the more Michigan voters learn, the less they trust Dick DeVos.

Or The More You Know About Dick DeVos The Worst It Gets! (4.00 / 1)
No wonder Michigan's own erstwhile Michael Huffington wannabe is so darn secretive about his financial holdings! What else is the Dick hiding from Michigan's voters? What else is DeVos hiding with his smoke screen on his financial investments? Dick DeVos is the first candidate for Governor in at least the last 60 years who refused to disclose the sources of his income and his actual holdings. But I guess if you profit from abusing senior citizens, you have certainly must have a lot other things to hide. Someone with the time needs to check the 527s that Bush used in his effort to abolish Social Security to see if DeVos's RAD PAC or any of his other known holdings helped finance the attack on Social Security. Someone also needs to explore and expose the Dicks relationship to Ed Buckham. There is one sleazy fellow who worked for the Dick and others.

More links of interest (0.00 / 0)
Thanks everybody, for the positive response. I'm still not done looking around, and boy there's a lot to look around ad.

A few more links: Global Aging has more information on elderly abuse at Alterra.

I already linked this Time article above, but notice on page 5 that the Michigan legislature removed Alterra from state oversight:

"Michigan decided it couldn't, and the state swiftly passed a law that allowed Cyphert and all other assisted-living residents to stay as long as they wish if the family, the doctor and the provider all agree to it. "Isn't that wonderful?" beams Alterra president Vick.

DeVos' Head Didn't Explode (0.00 / 0)
Since my guy's head didn't explode, so I won.

See, I already knew he was a lousy debater, but I was worried his head would explode from having to do all that thinkin'!

Course did anyone catch a picture of his back?  Could you see the puppet strings, oops, I mean the electronic device we used so we could whisper answers into his ear??

I may be a big ass, but I'm really just
