Foley in no way (that we know of) qualifies as a pedophile. That term is reserved for those who are sexualy attracted to pre-pubesent children. The people Foley was into were 16 and older (which, as an aside, is legal in Michigan).

Is it right for men in their 50s to lust after 16-year-olds? Of course not. But there is just a bit of homophobia showing in the outraged left. If it had been 16- and 17-year-old girls, would be be calling it "sick" and "repulsive"? Probably not — at least not as much, anyway. But since Foley is gay and happens to like males, he becomes a pedophile.

I am in no way condoning Foley's actions; they were wrong. I think the worst part about it is the abuse of power.

But really, the true crime here — like so often is the case — is in the coverup.

Thanks for saying what I've been thinking. I think we on the left are so ready and accustomed to jumping all over anything reprehensible in the GOP (and we've had lots of practice lately) that we just jump in on this full force without thinking it through. If it were girls, we'd be calling it wrong but not pedophilia. Also, if the scandal were about something that a 16-yr-old boy was initiating (let's say, the son of a congressman who was somehow in the public eye, caught doing something sexually abberant), there wouldn't be much talk about how he was just a child. This is NOT to say (like Matt Drudge's vile spin attempts) that it was the pages' fault for "egging him on." I must say, I'm glad for what Drudge said because it's so revealing of their desperate attempt to spin. But no pedophilia.

I'm gonna confess I don't know what DFP is or how to get to their site. (Hint: don't go to www.dfp.com if anyone is looking over your shoulder). I'm guessing it's something like dems for progress? My concerns with this list are a) we aren't sure whether these are all true and b) someone has probably compiled a similar list of dems charged with sexual crimes as well--so what do we do? Measure the length of the two lists? What are the "cut off dates"--is this only for people in office now or does it go back x number of years?

There are, sadly, many sick and twisted people out there and there's nothing that keeps these people from running for office. I wouldn't even be surprised if it's somewhat more common among republicans, who seem to specialize in "compartmentalized thinking" (keeping different parts of their mental lives completely separate), and maybe that's the point of this list. But I have no doubt that this kind of sickness and criminal behavior doesn't really know party lines.
