McCotter's $250K Investment Pays Dividends

by: Cordelia Lear

Fri Nov 17, 2006 at 17:38:02 PM EST

U.S. House Republicans held their leadership elections today. Michigan Congressman Thaddeus McCotter (R-Livonia) got what he paid for today.

...Rep. Thad McCotter won his policy committee race against Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.)

At the end of September McCotter contributed $250,000 to the NRCC.
Rep. Thad McCotter (R-Mich.) was this week’s surprise contributor by offering the NRCC $250,000.

A quarter of a million dollars is considered an unusually large contribution for a second term Congressman. It was obvious McCotter was putting his chips on the table in order to enter the leadership race. Money is still the mother's milk of republican politics.

Being part of the Republican Leadership Team - Priceless $250,000.

Can he influence anything? (4.00 / 1)
No.

The legislation he sponsors is ultra right-wing nut job. If the GOP caucus had any hopes of accomplishing anything in the next Congress, they would have elected someone else.

Well... (4.00 / 1)
I think Lott was the nail in that lock-n-stocked coffin, anyhow.  Fundraising always buys you a spot.  True of Dems, too, but at least they have varying stances on issues and can conflict with one another from time to time (Pelosi/Hoyer, who are both ginormous fundraisers).

Difference is Republican spots almost always go to far-right fundies.  McCotter's no different.  Feh!

Regarding McCotter, (0.00 / 0)
'far-right fundie' is pretty complimentary when talking about Thaddeus. That is a straightforward, two-dimensional label that is undoubtedly accurate. BUT!

It gets far worse. Cordelia Lear outlined some of the more glaring sins of his record. Beyond his votes and connections to the culture of corruption, though, is his unpalatable persona.

From the start (2002 election and on), it was second nature that I would not want McCotter, a Republican, as my U.S. Representative. Given his policy positions and party affiliation, that was a given.

Little did I know, however, how absolutely unappealing he is as a person. I must clarify: I am not saying he has horrible skeletons in his closet or personally clubbed a baby seal. I imagine and hope that he is a good father, husband, son and member of society.

I am saying that his draconian, contempible personality makes him all the more unfit to be in office.

It is one thing to read Stu Rothenberg write for "Roll Call" that McCotter is one of the worst candidates personality-wise for Congress that he ever met (and he has met thousands).

It is another thing to see first-hand your own Congressman exemplify that behavior in person at a public forum! I will NEVER get over how contemptible Thaddeus McCotter acted at this October's League of Women Voters forum.

Unacceptable. As a result of that, Thaddeus McCotter is my first-and-foremost most disliked Republican. And that is a tall order.

Honestly, though. Michigan and America deserves better. Even if it were a sensible Republican. (I'll work on electing the sensible Democrat, however).

Great Lakes, Great Times.

The Right is already sniping at the House leadership team (4.00 / 3)
In today's OpinionJournal.com, James Taranto had this to say about the GOP House leadership for the 110th Congress:

Some argued that the GOP would have been better off dumping the Boehner-Blunt "old guard" in favor of the "reformists" Pence and Shadegg. But hey, who better to lead the GOP minority than the men who helped create it?

Apparently competence isn't something that runs in Saul's family.

Why Does Saul AnuzAss always lie?

So that's where (0.00 / 0)
Andy has been hiding.

When you think of McCotter, just remember Anuzis is there too.

Some of McCotter's handy work (4.00 / 3)

    * Thaddeus McCotter took $20,000 from Tom DeLay's ARMPAC. No surprise that McCotter voted with Tom DeLay 90+% of the time.

    * McCotter voted to weaken the ethics rules in a move that many say served only to protect Tom DeLay. When Democrats offered a solution to clean up the House by strengthening ethics rules, McCotter voted to make sure it never even came to an up or down vote. And he voted to allow DeLay to continue serving as Leader even if he is indicted.

    * HR 748 co-sponsored by McCotter. The official title is Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act.

According to an analysis provided by the Center for Reproductive Rights, "The Act will create two federal crimes.* The first section of the bill -- the Travel Provision — makes it a federal crime for any person, other than a parent or guardian, to knowingly transport a minor across certain state lines to obtain an abortion, if the minor does not fulfill the requirements of her home state's law restricting minors' access to abortions.

The second section of the bill — the Federal Notification Provision -- imposes a federal parental notification and mandatory delay requirement on abortions performed on nonresident minors in more than half of the states.

    * McCotter voted for an amendment (H. Amdt. 278) to a budget bill (H.R. 2862) that would bar money from being spent to enforce a federal court ruling regarding a Ten Commandments case in Indiana, Russelburg v. Gibson County. DeLay and company are using Congressional purse strings to over rule the federal courts.  It's a blatant effort to throw out 200 years of constitutional history and make Congress the final interpreter

    * McCotter  has taken an EXTREME position on the issue of federal judges. He has co-sponsored HR1070 which is intended to go after "non God fearing judges."

Constitution Restoration Act of 2005 - Amends the Federal judicial code to prohibit the U.S. Supreme Court and the Federal district courts from exercising jurisdiction over any matter in which relief is sought against an entity of Federal, State, or local government or an officer or agent of such government concerning that entity's, officer's, or agent's acknowledgment of God as the sovereign source of law, liberty, or government.

    *  McCotter voted against the Stem Cell Enhancement Act which passed the Congress 238-194.

    * McCotter voted to condone religious proselytizing at our military academies.

    * McCotter co-sponsored HR 282, "The Iran Freedom Support Act." The bill, if passed, would give the President a blank check--yes, another one--to funnel federal money to exile groups.

    * Co-sponsored HR 4083 to build a $2B fence on the southern US border.

    And finally, true to form,

    * our wind up toy Congressman went along with his republican colleagues and voted to intervene into the Schiavo case.

He won a great big pile of nothing! (4.00 / 2)
With the Dems in charge of the House, the only thing Jackass McCotter earned was a higher ranking spot from which he could have a good cry as the Dems pass legislation that makes our country better.

Thad is obviously a card carrying member of the religious right.  The key to taking him down will be to expose his hypocrisy.

On a related note, the psuedo-Christian right may now be calling themselves "religious Christians".  It's catchy.  After all, if they're the religious ones, what does that make all us other left winged Christians? :)

"Religious Christians" sounds redundant (4.00 / 2)
Much like "long-suffering Spartan football fans."

When you have donors (0.00 / 0)
like Tom DeLay, what's a quarter of a million dollars? Bullshit feed. You get what you pay for.
