A beautiful day in the Neighborhood

(From the diaries. Won't you be my neighbor? - promoted by matt)

Originally posted on Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood. Cross-posted on DailyKos.

This morning Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood was featured in the Livingston Daily Press & Argus, on the front page and above the fold, no less! Many thanks to Dan Meisler for featuring our humble young blog so prominently today, and on behalf of all our contributors, I would like to welcome  all the new readers.

In Meisler's article, Livingston County Republican Party Chairman Allan Filip had this to say about political blogs:

"To really play a large role, a lot of these things are going to have to become less venomous," he said.

Generally speaking, Filip said, political blogs play to the extreme fringes of their particular parties.

"I don't think necessarily it's anything that's changing people's hearts and minds," he said.
Mr. Filip is certainly entitled to his opinion, but the people of the neighborhood are by no means looking to be "venomous" towards Mike Rogers – our goal is to simply inform constituents living in the 8th Congressional district about his record. If Chairman Filip feels we won't be "changing people's hearts and minds," then he has nothing to worry about.

We're simply here to eductate the people of "the neighborhood," and look forward to tracking Mike Rogers' service in Washington during the 110th Congress.

Kudos all around! (0.00 / 0)
Very nice article, and will give a little boost in the Republican fortress that is Livingston County.

Now if only some of the Lansing papers would take note. ;)

Lucy. You did really well. Approached it from a good perspective and not being mean or vindictive (snarky)!
Kudos to all of you on the good work so far.

Hope some more continue to contribute! ;)

Thank you!

Did you see this? (0.00 / 0)
Governor Granholm Selling Out the Internet?
http://www.mydd.com/...
Matt Stoller

I certainly support net neutrality.  With MI economy in the tank and nobody giving a damm, how is she suppose to veto 2,000 AT&T jobs?  I wouldn't want to be her on this one.

[ Parent ]
WTF (4.00 / 1)
Matt Stoller is not speaking for all of us here -- see any of the discussion spurred by InterrupT for examples of that.  If I had more time right now, I would refute that in full.  As it is, I'm writing a quick response right now.

I also didn't appreciate you referring to Granholm as a "DLCer" in a derogatory sense.

Check out my mediocre blog.

[ Parent ]
Si si. (4.00 / 1)
I would also refute, as I've been lurking this topic, but I'm too ill to conjure a coherent response.

One thing I will say is that I don't find Granholm a DLCer.  By-the-book, yes, but that's the state of the MI-Dem party.  We're here working for change, and it will take time to build from the ground up.  Michigan is largely ignored by the national grassroots and has a nascent, yet growing, statewide blogosphere and grassroots movement.

If anything, I think Granholm is very receptive to that growth.  She's no DLCer.  It's just the state that the party is in -- and has been in -- for decades.  For example, there was little analysis on Detroit politics for the longest time, because it was viewed as being completely reliant on the whims of labor organizations.

There's a legacy there.  Granholm is no "DLC Democrat," so I think that saying such is quite the misnomer.

I posted a response over at MyDD:

For all of their talk about local blogging and people power, I wish he'd talked to some of us first before posting that.

their argument (0.00 / 0)
In retrospect, I may have overreacted a bit.  The "selling out" title seemed kind of provocative, and I replied without thinking first.

Their argument for doing this now is that once the cable/telecom companies get franchising rights, they will no longer have an incentive to "trade" anything for net neutrality.

What do you all think?

Check out my mediocre blog.

Faaabulous post, Nirmal.  Loved it.  Well articulated and to-the-point.  And on this:

Its also worth noting that while a lot of people perceive Granholm to be a "DLC" or "establishment" type, she understands the potential of the netroots and is more supportive of us than any of the rest of the party establishment here in Michigan.  She reads us every day, reaches out to us personally, and supports our work while understanding that we aren't under her control and are going to be critical of her from time to time.

I can only give you mad props.  Way on.  You go, boy!  2 + 2 still = 4 in Lansing (and on MichLib for your comment!).  :D

You were too kind if anything (4.00 / 1)
I'm amazed at how many times a day I can click on a blog like Kos and read something that's just plain wrong.  Stoller should have done his homework.  Here in Michigan we moved beyond the "Granholm is DLC" name-calling months ago.

I even posted a diary on it:  http://www.michiganl...

[ Parent ]
Right on. (4.00 / 1)
Just as appropriate now as it was then.

If you're as frustrated as I am, work for change within the party.  Talk to other people, especially outside your usual social circle (skip the obvious "base" type wingnuts, though there's a good 35 percent of this country who wouldn't abandon Bush and DeVos even if they ate babies on national TV).  I like to talk with moderate democrats and find out where they're willing to compromise with my fringe-leftie values.  We'll need that information down the road.  If you're trying to take over a local democrat precinct (or the state party structure, for that matter), remember that there's strength in numbers.

Mad kudos to you, Eartha.  So on the money.  People want to call Granholm DLC?  I call that Granholm is one of the few -- if ONLY -- politician in Michigan who truly tries to engage the whole state in an economic turnaround.  It's why the Saginaw News endorsed her -- she payed attention to that region.

She doesn't scream at voter bases in Detroit, Ann Arbor, Royal Oak, Lansing, and Kalamazoo.  She doesn't sit around like Queen Regent of the Democrats and posture to her clear bases.  She is engaged -- and speaks to -- all of Michigan.

It's the (strong, and long-established current of) state politics that get her the "DLC Dem" misnomer.  Granholm is truly a voice of the Michiganian, and it is up to us -- her constituents -- to carry her vision, message, and voice concerns where we have them.

But there is nothing "DLC" about her.  And your post then -- as now -- speaks very well to the concept of the "DLC Dem."

So I can only compliment you.  1,000 kudos!

"DLC" seems to be the ultimate slander... (4.00 / 1)
... and I'm bored with it now. Hoping the DLC becomes irrelevant soon enough.

Time to move on, as they say.

[ Parent ]
DLC (0.00 / 0)
There is no doubt that the DLC has had a corrosive impact on our party, especially recently.  Although Granholm has given speeches to them (and I think she's a member), she isn't the kind of person that people insinuate that she is by calling her a DLCer.

Check out my mediocre blog.

[ Parent ]
No, she's not. (0.00 / 0)
Time to dispel that myth. She may run with a few of them because she is smart enough to keep powerful friends at hand and not burn bridges, but she is not a member.

She has a future career to consider. Remember, she will be just shy of 52 when she leaves office here-

Congratulations, Lucy! (0.00 / 0)
Isn't it great to pick up the paper and see your name "in lights" on Page One? Take a bow!

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

Thanks... (4.00 / 1)
...although it's a little weird to see both of them in lights. :-)

Congratulations! (0.00 / 0)
I have to disagree with his assessment about Mr. Filip's notion that blogs play to the "extreme fringes."

I believe political blogs appeal to folks who give a damn, period.  Sure, there are some zany posts (and I've probably made my share of them). In general though, it comes down to loving America and our democracy. It is easy to not care and tune it out - what a cop out.
