Free Press Needs Front Page Retraction on House Dems Article

by: Gus

(From the diaries. - promoted by nirmal)

Remember last year when the Free Press printed this on their front page: CHRIS CHRISTOFF: My goof: DeVos isn't out to kill Medicaid? (the only copy I could find is in WK's archives here.)

Well it seems time for the Detroit Free Press to print another front page retraction of their shoddy reporting.

Right-wing media goon Dawson Bell has done a hit job on Speaker Andy Dillon and the House Dems. Bell repeatedly reports as fact that the House Dems have a $38 million ipod proposal. But in truth, they never did.

As reported by Wizard Kitten yesterday, Rick Albin states "In reality, there was never a plan to buy all students iPods."

In MIRS today, House Education Committee Chair Tim Melton strongly critized Detroit News Conservative Editor Finley for  "Ludicrous, completely off the mark and irresponsible journalism." Melton also says "It's absurd to even think that we proposed an iPod for every school child.. It was blown out of proportion?" I am guessing his criticism can be applied to the root of the hitjob as well, Dawson Bell.

It even appears that Rep. Gillard was trying to make this point in the Free Press hitjob when he says the media has "focused too narrowly on the iPod." But Dawson does not even let him have a full sentence before continuing to slam giving ipods to everyone.

I am irate that Dawson Bell is getting away with this bullshit. The Free Press needs a retraction now. Or do they only give retractions to billionaire republicans?

I've posted the update on this over at Daily Kos as well as both Slashdot and Digg (though the odds of my post ever being seen on either of those sites is slim).

Do you have the dkos link? (0.00 / 0)

There are some good comments about right wing media bias and sloppy journalism - obviously both apply here.

... to the Christoff story in my archives (that the Disembodied Head destroyed. I had to go clean that up and put the paragraph breaks back in.)

Funny that the Detroit News, the ones who usually are quick to point out any detail that might make the Dems look bad, did NOT include any mention of iPods in their original story about this press conference.

They had a breakdown on the side of the three different plans, and all they said was this- "$38 million to bring new computer learning tools to classrooms". That's it.

After Dawson Bell ran his story on the press conference in the Free Press, suddenly the DN chose to reinforce the "iPods" theme in an editorial, when their own reporters didn't say a word about it.

But now that I dig some more - I have Peter Luke saying it in a Booth story also, although he is pretty vague and never uses the word "iPod".

It calls for universal health care, reregulation of electric utilities, salary studies of government- and school-employee benefits and even hand-held computers for school students.

Something was said at that press conference, something that made Bell foam at the mouth, something that registered with Peter Luke.

This is why we need video of the full length press conferences up on the web for all to see- not just clips, not just a reporter's take on what was said, but the real deal so we can fact check this stuff.

Good idea, wrong paper, though. (0.00 / 0)
The Detroit Free Press and Detroit News are two different papers.  The DTN needs to do a retraction, not the Free Press (unless they said something I don't know about).

Nevermind. (0.00 / 0)
I read the blogpost by wizardkitten.  DTN is more to blame than anything, IMO, though.
