David Nacht Serious Contender

by: kbs386

Sat Jun 30, 2007 at 21:21:36 PM EDT

Anyone following the run-up to the 2008 election in Michigan's 7th district can be glad to know that a serious contender has emerged. I have heard that David Nacht has raised $155,000 this past quarter. This is exactly what this race needs, a real challenger who can generate excitement and support. Through his actions and words, Tim Walberg has proven that the 7th district is a winnable district for Democrats in '08. Nacht's ability to raise money puts him in a strong position to challenge Walberg. Nacht not only has the ability to raise money, but he has also worked for John Glenn, gaining DC experience, and successfully unseated a Republican township board, showing his ability to build and sustain grassroots support. Fundraising success, grassroots support, and practical experience all serve as a great foundation for making a successful run at Congress.

These comments are informative (4.00 / 2)
about Nacht's possible viability and history of campaign donations, see Walberg Watch here.

By the way, I see "kbs386" has no other diaries, no comments. Interesting...

P.S. How is Jim Berryman not a serious contender? re the contention that "a serious contender has emerged" with Nacht?

Of note (4.00 / 1)
By the way, I see "kbs386" has no other diaries, no comments. Interesting...

So, the poster wrote his/her first diary. We've all done that. I wouldn't read into that. Let's discuss the issue, not the author.

Speaking of the issue, I think both Berryman and Nacht are serious contenders. The fact that Nacht has already raised more than 3x the amount Renier did in her entire campaign tells us a lot.

Berryman will also raise a lot more money than Renier did. That, plus the DCCC will be involved this go-around as well.

Speaking of money, do you know of any other Republicans to whom Nacht donated besides Schwarz? If the quite moderate (by GOP standards) Schwarz was the only one, I wouldn't be on his case as much than I would had he donated to, say, Bouchard or Butler.

So, the poster wrote his/her first diary. We've all done that. I wouldn't read into that.

It's also basically formatted as a campaign release.

In terms of the numbers, I wonder how much of that is self-funding?

Check out my mediocre blog.

Agreeing With the Schwarz Thing (0.00 / 0)
At least in the past, in the 7th District, a Democrat supporting Scwharz is pretty similar to a Green-leaner supporting a Dem in most races. I don't know when the last time was that a Dem won the 7th - it's usually a choice between what kind of Republican you prefer. And I've seen how much Dems love this sacrificing of principles for the sake of realpolitik when it comes to garnering their own votes.

Two Unrelated Points... (4.00 / 1)
1. I was probably reading ML for six months before I ever made a comment, much less wrote a diary. If one of the goals of this community is to grow and become the source for progressive news in Michigan, then we must stop attacking people the first time they post. I will not argue that it is not possible that this person is part of the campaign (who cares if they are), but it is also possible that this is the first time they have been moved to actually comment, let's give them the benefit of the doubt.

2. While I think $150K is wonderful, it is not enough to seriously compete against Tim Walberg. If Nacht is our leading fundraiser at $150K then we need to go back to the drawing board and find a new candidate. It will take $2 - $3 million to beat Walberg. $150K in what should be your easiest quarter (read: low hanging fruit) will barely get you to $1 million, much less $3 million.

On Point 2 (4.00 / 2)
I think $155,000 to start with would be plenty to be able to compete against Walberg, provided he raises as much or more in future quarters.

Remember, you don't necessarily have to out-spend a candidate like Walberg. Renier nearly did it with almost nothing, and, while that was a different election, I think a Democratic candidate could win with $500,000 and DCCC support. Of course, $3,000,000 would be great too.

Out of curiosity, what "new candidate" would you propose? A "Draft Schauer" campaign?

  If they're a shill, that's not a nice thing...

Only one candidate can beat Walberg..... (0.00 / 0)
If Schauer wont run the only person in that district who can beat Walberg is Doug Spade.  Spade would give Walberg fits in Walbergs hometown.

A Little Money Might Do the Trick (0.00 / 0)
With Bush's popularity declining even further, and the fact that the Dem candidate last time (so little known that I can't even recall her name off the top of my head) put up a good fight despite a lackluster resume and even less lustrous funds, I don't see why multiple Dem candidates wouldn't have shots. The Dems are supposedly targeting this district for more funding.

Personally I think a moderate Republican like Schwarz is more of a shoe-in going against a Dem in this district than is Walberg. It's basically a district for Republicans to lose, and by running a Christo-Fascist preacher instead of a moderate physician, that's one way to lose it. The only reason I suspect Schwarz lost the primary is because the hardliners tend to show for primaries, and then some of the independents and less ideological conservatives were scared of Walberg by the time the general election rolled around (they wouldn't have been scared of Schwarz) and went Dem instead.
