Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson is replacing his acting campaign manager with former senator and energy secretary Spencer Abraham and Florida GOP strategist Randy Enright.
Thompson spokeswoman Linda Rozett said acting campaign manager Tom Collamore, former vice president of food and tobacco giant Altria, still will advise the campaign. Collamore has helped organize the campaign for Thompson, who has not officially jumped into the race.
For you those of you who are too young to remember Mr. Abraham's mediocre career, "gather 'round children" and I will tell you a few things about this guy.
First he was Chairman of the Michigan Republican Party at a time when his party was not doing very well on the statewide level. And I give him no credit whatsoever for John Engler's 1990 victory.
In 1994, he won an open seat in the U.S. Senate during the worst possible year for Democrats and the best year for Republicans. In other words, he caught a wave. As senator, he sucked. Calling his office for any information or assistance was like throwing objects into a black hole. What's worse, he used earmarks to play Western and Northern Michigan against the Detroit area (and perhaps all of Southeastern Michigan). So when 200 rolled around, he could not hold onto his seat, losing a close race to Debbie Stabenow (sweet irony: as with the 1990 governor race, we did not know the outcome 'til the next day).
Having no shortage of party contacts, he somehow managed to land a cabinet seat as Secretary of Energy, another job he could not hold onto.
Thanks, Fred. If your choice of campaign staff is any indication of how you are going to run your campaign, I don't feel very good about your chances. Lazy candidate, lazy choice. |
