Updated! (I don't like monkeying with other people's diaries, but at the bottom, we've got reaction from presidential candidates! -- Eric B.)
From politico.com:
On a party-line 21-17 vote, the Republican-held Michigan state Senate approved a bill to move their primary to Jan. 15 next year, a move that could push the start of the presidential voting process into 2007.
With the GOP-controlled state Senate today passing a bill to change the date, Anuzis said there "is a growing consensus in the [Dem-held] House that Jan. 15 is the best way to go.
"There doesn't seem to be any organized opposition and people are starting to talk about how Michigan will be relevant and will be the focus of the nation [by going so early]."

Though Mark Brewer moved quickly to oppose this primary move up with a statement made on the Michigan Democratic website:
Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer released the following statement regarding the Michigan Senate Republicans decision to pass a presidential primary bill.
"It's unfortunate that the Senate Republicans passed this presidential primary bill today. The Michigan Democratic Party continues to oppose this bill and we applaud all the Democrats in the State Senate for unanimously voting against it. We look forward to having our caucus plan approved at the DNC's Rules and Bylaws Committee meeting this Saturday in Washington, DC."
Update!--According to the Iowa Independent, Bill Richardson and Chris Dodd issue statements that echo something Joe Biden said ... Iowa, not Michigan, should be first.
