Mark Schauer to challenge Walberg in 7th

Update 3: You can sign up for Mark Schauer's campaign email list here.

Update 2: Mark Schauer blogs about his candidacy, over at Walberg Watch.

Update: See below the fold for full text of press release.

Here we go, he finally announced! (See previous post about his testing the waters, including DCCC polling data.)

From the AP:

State Senate Minority Leader Mark Schauer said Thursday he will seek the Democratic nomination to challenge freshman Republican U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg in the 2008 election after declining earlier overtures to enter the race.

"Tim Walberg is not doing the job," Schauer told The Associated Press on Thursday. "He is serving a very narrow interest. He's really been a servant of the Bush-Cheney administration and the extreme special interests in Washington."
A hearty good luck to Sen. Schauer. Goodness knows you have our support here at Michlib!

MARK SCHAUER TAKES IMPORTANT STEP TOWARDS BID FOR CONGRESS

Creates candidate committee for possible 7th Congressional District race

BATTLE CREEK - State Senate Democratic Leader Mark Schauer (D-Battle Creek), today created a candidate committee for a 7th Congressional district bid. The filing is an important first step in becoming an official candidate in the race.

"The people of Michigan's 7th district deserve a Congressman who will put their best interests ahead of his own, or that of special interests," said Schauer. "Unfortunately, the incumbent has been more concerned with the extreme agenda of George W. Bush and Washington Republicans, but that type of party politics doesn't reflect the values of our district, and it needs to change."

Schauer has a long history of serving south central Michigan. He was elected to represent Battle Creek in the State House of Representatives in 1996. After serving three terms, he was elected to the 19th State Senate district covering Calhoun and Jackson counties in 2002. Schauer has worked to help companies such as Kellogg's, Duncan Aviation, Sparton Corporation and Eaton Aerospace retain and add local jobs. Schauer also partnered with former Congressman Joe Schwarz to help save the Battle Creek Air National Guard base.

Prior to his service in the Michigan Legislature, Schauer was a Battle Creek City Commissioner and worked as the executive director of the Community Action Agency of South Central Michigan. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Albion College, a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Western Michigan University and a Masters Degree in Political Science from Michigan State University where he is also all-but-dissertation in Political Science & Urban Studies. He is married to Christine and has three stepchildren.

"The needs of the communities I serve have always been my top priority," said Schauer. "I will continue to work towards securing jobs, improving health care, and creating better educational opportunities in my current role or as a candidate for Congress."

A number of critics have pointed out that the current Congressman has failed working families by voting against an increase in the minimum wage, even though he supported a 38 percent salary increase for himself while a state representative. He has also opposed expanding health care to more than 4.1 million uninsured children and advocated for the privatization of social security. He recently went so far as to vote against a budget bill, yet tried to take credit for local projects included in the legislation.

Fantastic. Where do I sign up to volunteer for the campaign?

Not ready.. (1.50 / 4)
I'm not ready to jump on the Schauer bandwagon yet. I would advise everyone to read the Susan Demas article on his candidacy from last week. Really makes you think about the consequences of Schauer running for congress.
One few of the reasons I'm not certain: How will he spend his time? If he spends his time campaigning rather than working in the senate, I definately can't support him.

So what... (4.00 / 2)
You'd vote against him, not because you think he'd do a worse job as a representative than Tim Walberg, but because you don't think people running for office should be campaigning?

Not quite... (0.00 / 0)
I'm still undecided as far as the primary. We are having one!

So, what's your point? (0.00 / 0)
That Mark Schauer shouldn't run because he's a sitting state senator?

I honestly don't understand your beef with this.

Demas is just trying to make a name for herself. She thought that article would make a splash.

Senate Seat (0.00 / 0)
Is Shauer's senate seat safe for another Dem to pick it up?

Let's put an end to Knollenberg's "SUB-PRIME" career.

Thats another reason I'm skeptical... (2.25 / 4)
No, its not safe in the least. Mike Noffs has been grooming to pick up that seat for the past few years. His current house seat is part of the district, as well as some of the more conservative parts of Jackson County.

The open seat is not totally in Republican hands. (4.00 / 1)
Democratic State Reps. Mike Simpson and Martin Griffin are in the State Senate district as well (Both in Jackson County). I've worked with State Rep. Simpson before and the idea of running for the seat in the special election (if there were to be one) is possible.

This is Great News! (4.00 / 3)
First, I have to say Yeah! I have been hoping for this for sometime. I am excited that we now have our best candidate in the race.

To the concern trolls out there. Mark Schauer is the the hardest working man in MI politics and will be able to stick it to Tim Walberg and the Senate Republicans at the same time. No, his seat in the Senate is not completely safe, but it won't be in 2010 either. But, that is why he is our best candidate because he has shown that he can win in tough seats.

Mark, I know you struggled with this decision, but I am so glad that you have decided to do this. Please let me know how I can help.

walberg watch statement (4.00 / 3)
Senator Schauer posted a statement about his candidacy on Walberg Watch.

Check out my mediocre blog.

Whats the lay of the land? (0.00 / 0)
Of the 7 counties in the 7th, whats the turf like?

Walberg posted terrible numbers to Renier's terribly funded campaign. But glancing at the map and driving through doesn't lead me to believe this is Dem territory.

Where are the base, battleground, and red jurisdictions in the 7th?

Huzzah! (4.00 / 1)
I've waited most of my life for this news.  After enduring Nick Smith for all those years, putting up with lazy Joe Schwarz, and trying not to kill myself when Walberg won, it's finally our turn.

The people who live in MI-7 are going to be so surprised by what real representation in Congress can mean that they'll eventually be naming streets and schools after him.

This is such big news!  This is huge!  Mark Schauer is running for Congress and Walberg is in it deep.

I always thought Schwarz was as good as the 7th would do... (4.00 / 1)
I always assumed that Joe Schwarz was about as good as Jackson would do in Congress, and figured that Tim Walberg and Nick Smith were about typical.

Now, after years of ridiculing my old hometown's Congressional representation, it looks like they could put an honest-to-goodness progressive in D.C.  Meanwhile, I languish under Dave Camp, a man so mediocre he could turn jerk chicken bland.

How the worm turns, my friends.  How the worm turns.

Among the Trees

I've only got two concerns about this... (0.00 / 0)
1. After he crushes Walberg (and he will), who'se the next best candidate for the Governor race?

2. Now we have someone who can crush Walberg, and someone who can crush Knollenberg.  Who do we have to crush McCotter?

Going National (0.00 / 0)
Wow, this Schauer candidacy is causing quite the stir.  It's big news on the national blogs as well.  I guess were not the only ones who think that Schauer takes this race to a new level!  Check it out.

This guy's for real (0.00 / 0)
You don't always get public servants (even the ones we generally agree with) who are not afraid to lay it on the line for what they believe in. Schauer hasn't backed down from Bishop, he hasn't avoided making the tough argument to invest in Michigan, and he sure as hell won't take any cheap shots from Walberg without pushing right back. It's been rare that Michigan gets some real top-tier races, but this one is it.

Is he going to remain as Democratic leader? (0.00 / 0)

Success is not final, failure is not fatal. - Winston Churchill

Mark can win it (0.00 / 0)
As a former resident of the 7th I can tell you that it is not going to be an easy race for any Democrat. Battle Creek is the most Democratic area in the district but there are large pockets of Dems in the Lansing and Ann Arbor burbs as well as in Jackson. Mark has proven that he can win and win big in this area. He is the best possible candidate that we can field. In Mark's last campaign for the state house he defeated a credible challenger with almost 70% of the vote in a 50/50 district. I wish Mark a lot of luck and hope we can all unite behind him in this race. When it comes time to fill his state senate seat we will rise to that challenge and keep it in Democratic hands.

Out of District but will send $ to Walberg opponent (4.00 / 1)
I'm not in this district (I'm in the 8th, which has a distinct lack of candidates).  However, whoever emerges from the primary in the 7th (if there is one) that is not Walberg, will get whatever campaign contributions I can muster.  Good luck Senator - give 'em hell!
