*UPDATE*: Obama, Edwards, Dodd, Richardson, Biden AND HILLARY pledge to avoid Michigan primary

by: David Boyle

Sat Sep 01, 2007 at 14:06:35 PM EDT

(Topical, but not in an ointment sort of way - promoted by Eric B.)

  As ethics demand they should.

See, e.g., Daily Kos, Breaking: John Edwards signs Four State Pledge. It reveals that Obama, Edwards, Dodd, Richardson, and Biden have all done the right thing and pledged to stick with the four states Howard Dean and the DNC are happy with keeping first: a geographically diverse array of early primary/caucus states, Iowa (Midwest), New Hampshire (Northeast), South Carolina (South, and considerable African-American representation), and Nevada (West, and considerable Latina/o representation).

I could write a long thing about this, but...does the Granholm/Brewer/Dingell early primary idea look like a

  GOOD IDEA

now?
  Maybe not, huh.

David Boyle :: *UPDATE*: Obama, Edwards, Dodd, Richardson, Biden AND HILLARY pledge to avoid Michigan primary
Of course, Hillary can still break the rules and campaign in Florida and Michigan, but there may be terrible formal and informal penalties for doing so. Nobody likes a cheat, and this is why I like MDP's and Michigan Dem politicians' policies less and less.

(And if you disagree on the early primary, congratulations, you've just disagreed with Obama, Edwards, Dodd, Richardson, and Biden, which is a lot of prominent people to disagree with.)

BONUS LINK: Here's Barack O on the process, at Obama Pledges to Honor Role of Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire and South Carolina in Choosing Democratic Nominee for President,

"...'As I have campaigned across America over the last six months, it's become clear that Governor Dean and the Democratic National Committee have put together a presidential nomination process that's in the best interests of our party and our nation,' said Senator Obama. 'I look forward to continuing the dialogue with voters and building the kind of grassroots movement in Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire and South Carolina and the rest of the country that will send a clear signal to Washington that the American people are ready for change.'

Obama campaign officials also urged states in danger of violating DNC rules to adjust their plans to comply with the DNC's calendar, so that every state contributes delegates to the nominating process. ..."

Nice to be right (0.00 / 0)
, if I may say so. If Brewer/Granholm/Dingell had learned from some of the posts (by various people) on Michigan Liberal discouraging an early primary, they would look less like failures today.

Umm (4.00 / 2)
Really, don't throw Brewer into that mix. He has been AGAINST an early primary.

Deal? (4.00 / 3)
Maybe I'm just an optimist, but I think there'll be a deal between the DNC and Michigan and Florida sometime soon. Michigan and Florida want a greater voice in the process, the DNC needs to show that it's still in charge... but I think there's still room for compromise somewhere in there.

But I wasn't supposed to let myself do any blogging today. I'm supposed to be watching Michigan lose to Appalachian State. Heh.

Not for nothin'... (4.00 / 7)
... but doesn't it seem a little odd that the legislature could work cooperatively to get this early primary through, but they STILL haven't sent a budget to the Governor???  Michigan politicians on both sides of the aisle need to pull up their socks, quit whining about how mean the other guys are, and get cracking on the very real issues facing our state.

There are loads of things that should be changed in our presidential primary system, but this isn't one of them.

that the Michigan Democratic Party doesn't shake down candidates for hundreds of thousands of dollars by charging for the voter file, a perk that IA and NH are scared of losing.

Game over, Hillary's out (0.00 / 0)
See Yahoo, More candidates to skip rogue Dem states,

"Hillary Rodham Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards on Saturday joined three other Democrats who say they will skip states that break party rules by holding early primaries. ...
Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm has encouraged candidates to ignore the pact, saying unfair trade policies and her state's manufacturing crisis were more important than the politics behind which states get to vote early. Granholm has been preparing to sign legislation that would move Michigan's contest to Jan. 15, despite the threat of DNC sanctions.
"We expect that all of the Democratic candidates for president will be on the ballot in Michigan on January 15th. We hope that every candidate will campaign here," Granholm said Saturday. ...
Despite leading her rivals in those states, Clinton campaign officials reluctantly agreed to abide by the pledge because the risk of antagonizing activists in Iowa and New Hampshire by refusing to do was too great. ..."

Good, now I won't have to write a Daily Kos diary tomorrow, "Mail Hillary to have her take the Four State Pledge", like I was going to do.

Oh Jenny. What have you done.

This is what's called "drama" (4.00 / 2)
I can tell you this makes absolutely no difference here in the north (or anywhere north of Grand Rapids/Detroit for that matter).  No candidate ever, ever, ever bothers to come north of the aforementioned areas during primary (or the GE) so we won't notice any difference.

We shall see how this plays out in the end but I am having a tough time seeing it as the end of the world as we know it, as you seem determined to paint it.

At this point, I've got $10 that says our delegates are seated at national convention.

Julie

To prepare for when your life flashes before your eyes, make sure it's fun to watch.

It might require some apologies by MDP, etc., though...

You can stop right after no candidate bothers... (4.00 / 2)
All we ever get are reruns of of Donna B. and Bill Clinton.
I for one am really tired of Democrats in general and MI Democrats in particular.  Give me Bill Milliken, and I'm a Republican. Patterson, DeVos, and Bishop, and I'm screaming for Ralph Nader.  I am sick and tired of Iowa and NH picking the Pres.  I have no interest in a primary, and I don't want to spend 14 million dollars for one.  Add in Republicans passed this. which makes me totally against it.
All in all, I wouldn't give you a plug nickel for any of it or them.

Good Idea!!! (4.00 / 1)
Reluctantly, because I do hope to see Michigan play a more important role in the nominating process in the future, I must say that this pledge is a good idea.

The constant leap-frogging of early states, leading to an extremely frontloaded primary season is dangerous for the Democratic Party and dangerous for our general election candidate.

By allowing the states to continue moving their primaries forward, the Democratic Party and the candidates run the risk of allowing the candidates with the most money to buy primaries through ad time, etc..  Rather than having a real vetting of candidates based on issues and policies.

Furthermore, a frontloaded primary schedule that could occur if the candidates hadn't taken action, would only hurt the Democrats in the 2008 race, because it would give the GOP nearly a full year to bash our nominee.

While I think we need to come to a long term solution that includes a rotation of the early states...Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Nevada are it for 2008!
