Inferiority complex?

by: ScottyUrb

Here's a part of a piece on Gongwer regarding a recent interview Governor Granholm gave to Michigan Public Radio:

Asked on a radio call-in show if she thought the state suffered from an inferiority complex, Ms. Granholm said, "Yes, I do."

She did not blame the state for being down on itself given the ongoing economic problems, "but if we look at what this state has to offer, we have to have all hands on deck" to help rebuild the state.

As she travels around the nation and the world in search of companies looking to locate in the state, Ms. Granholm said she finds that people outside of Michigan do not have the negative impression of the state that its own residents have.

I've noticed quite a few people seem to be having that negative perception about Michigan, and not always because of the weather or the economy. What do you think? Have you seen a lot of people down about our state? How justified do you think it is?

Like the Guv, I don't blame people all that much given what's gone on. But how many other states have what we have?

Or maybe it's just a part of a general attitude people have toward where they live. Do Wisconsinites, Pennsylvanians, Tennesseans, etc., have the same attitudes about their home states as many Michiganders/Michiganians do?

I love Michigan! (4.00 / 4)
I think that people are just concerned because it's so tough with the manufacturing jobs leaving the state.

I won't say "that's all it is," because that is a big deal. But I think that is where this is coming from.

I love Michigan... (4.00 / 4)
I've been to Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, California, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Cuba, Iraq, and a whole bunch of other places.  There's no place I'd rather live than Oakland County, Michigan.

Anyone who has any complaints about this place is invited to spend a year in Dayton, Ohio.  You'll love Michigan after that!

Putting conservatives in charge of our government makes about as much sense as GM hiring a CEO who hates cars.

Inferior and yet superior... (4.00 / 4)

I've traveled to 49 of the 50 states and a dozen countries, lived in France and spent 2 years living in D.C. (aka "the Swamp").  What keeps bringing me back?  It's home.  I love this place and I've turned down many good opportunities to stay here and be part of the solution instead of sitting around complaining about things.

Maybe if each of us tried to do something pro-Michigan (and I'm not talking the Wolverines here, people), we could help with this inferioriy complex that Michigan residents have.

I'll start:  I drive a Michigan-made car, I'm going to wear a Michigan made wool sweater today and have lunch with a couple of MichLibbers at a local-food focused restaurant where we'll loudly proclaim the superiority of our state to others.

Do stupid people know they are stupid?

Michigan kicks butt. (4.00 / 3)
Hey, man, I tried to leave, but this place keeps pulling me back in. Even in Portland, OR, which is arguably where all good people go when they die, all the Michigan expats would get together and talk about our distant home. We missed swimming in lakes. We missed canoing on rivers. We even missed urban decay. Sure, the West is beautiful, but it's not real.

So after four years there and two in Wyoming, then I came home. And I've been happy ever since. Although if Horrock's doesn't start getting more Oregon wines in soon I'm going to have to wrestle that booze distributor.

In response to djtyg--I'll one-up you. I lived two years in Laramie, Wyoming. Ohio may be the armpit of the country, but Laramie. . . let's just say it's a little further south on the bodily comparisons. :-)

great. lakes state. (4.00 / 2)
I heard the interview and thought this was an interesting assertion by the Governor. Like many of the previous commenters, I consider Michigan my home but lived elsewhere for 10 years (Chicago, Seattle, a few east coast cities), recently deciding to move back. I love Michigan but find that a lot of people here really do spend a lot of time on self-loathing about the state.

That said, I think that, to some extent, she's correct -- in particular, I think native Michiganders forget about both the state's natural resources and the quality of life that is associated with those resources. Thousands of people in Chicago, for example, know the state for the time they spend here on summer vacation getaways. They see the state through "Pure Michigan" lenses.

The only exception I can think of is Detroit -- there we have an PR nightmare of international proportions. People who've never been there routinely use it as the poster child of urban decay and neglect -- deserved or not.
