Are you Watching your Republican CongressCritter?

by: LiberalLucy

Tue Oct 16, 2007 at 15:18:54 PM EDT

Do you know this Democratic Congressional Candidate?

You won't find his name on the wall in the post office, but you just might see it on billboards and yard signs in the coming months. His name is Scott Killips and he's running against Pete Hoekstra in Michigan's 2nd Congressional District. Today he launched his website.

You might not live in the 2nd CD, but do you know your local Congresscritter? While our state is blessed to have a fantastic Democratic Congressional Caucus, we're also cursed with a couple Republicans thrown in here and there, like Hoekstra, Tim Walberg, Thad 'Momma's Boy' McCotter, Candice Miller, Fred Upton, Dave Camp, Vern Ehlers, Joe Knollenberg and my own critter, Mike Rogers.

We all want them out, and there's only way to go about it, get to work pounding the pavement, working on research, raising money, and blogging, blogging, blogging.

One of the biggest reasons Michigan's progressive netroots is a national leader is due to our respected congressional watch-blogs. We're winning the battle, but the war is far from over, and we need your help.

Do you like to do research? There are plenty of skeletons in the Republican campaign finance closet, most available online.

Are you more of the artistic type? We can always use a few good men and women with mad Photoshopping/Illustrator skills.

Are you good with a camcorder? We can always use more trackers, following the Congresscritters at their various public events, just waiting for the next Macaca moment. Trust me, sooner or later it will happen, and you will be so glad you were there.

Do you like to write? We always need more bloggers publishing the facts and photos.

We've got a fantastic crew of CD watchbloggers, but there's always room for more help. If you're interested in pitching in no matter what way, contact me (liberallucy [at] gmail [dot] com) or email the contributors directly through their blogs.

Check out the list of Congressional WatchBlogs below -

Thanks for the nod! GO SCOTT!!!

"Kill the headlights and put it in neutral..."

I was at work when this went up (4.00 / 3)
so I'm so late, but...

YAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!

Show Scott some love, y'all. I was a little worried after seeing the under-construction page this weekend (it was a little scary), but the website is sooo slick and so cool.

I agree (2.50 / 2)
I hate to say anything personally negetive about a fellow Dem running for office, but if this photo is current, the candidate needs some image consultation.  Better here than when he goes before the electorate next year.  The moustache needs to go.  It makes him look like a used car salesman or a shady version of our beloved Mark Schauer.  This isn't meant to be mean, just some helpful advice.

I don't agree about the stach or (0.00 / 0)
running away from his job; but I think you meant your comment to be snarky and not offensive.  So even though I don't agree with it, I uprated it.

Quite Frankley (2.50 / 2)
After viewing his website, the moustache isn't the biggest problem.  The stuff about the gaming industry leading on his bio is a death sentence in that West Michigan district.  Mr. Killips could be a very attactive candidate, but he needs to take down that website immediately and have someone review it.  Although I've never met him personally, I'm going to suggest Derek Dobies at www.dobiesconsulting.com.  Because he is new to the trade, he ought to offer a fresh but cheap perspective.

LiberalLucy, it's my hope you'll revoke Black Earl's troll rating.  I believe he meant well.

Eric B., thanks as always for standing up for common sense.

I appreciate your diplomacy (4.00 / 2)
but tact is something that is expected of members of this community.

There are ways to express an opinion and doing it sounding like an adult, and then there are other ways. I think this community, and certainly any candidate that gives a large part of his or her life to serving others at least deserves tact, if nothing else.

Since you seem to be an expert on MI-02, (3.00 / 3)
I suppose you already knew that the casino industry is one of the largest employers and sources of health insurance for MI-02's Northern counties?

Scott used to work in the Auto Industry and during the 1990's he; like nearly 50,000 other Michiganders were forced to look for employment elsewhere. The auto industry was no longer hiring and tens of thousands of Michiganders were forced to change careers. That is not anything to be ashamed of, nor is it anything he should shy away from.

Scott has already received one-on-one candidate training and campaign advice during an extensive candidate training seminar this past August from the following people (among others):

  • Dan Lucas, Executive Director of 21st Century Democrats - Sessions on campaign basics.
  • Erin Lehane of Political and Public Strategieson, - Crafting an effective message.
  • Anne Caprara of EMILY's List - Opposition research.
  • Christine Pelosi, DNC Resolutions Committee and Erin Lehane - Developing a political vision.
  • Greg Lebel, Professor of Political Management at George Washington University - Campaign budgeting.
  • Peggy Flanagan, Deputy National Field Director / Senior Trainer of Wellstone Action
  • Tom Hughes, Executive Director of Democracy For America; Arshad Hasan, Training Director of Democracy For America; and Dan Lucas - Developing a campaign plan.
  • Governor Howard Dean, DNC Chairman
  • Representative Mike Honda, (D) Ca-15
  • Senator Mike Gravel, D-Alaska
  • Representative Dennis Kucinich, (D) OH-10

Each and every one of these people told Scott:

  1. There is no reason for Scott to be ashamed of his history.

  2. He'd be a fool if he tried to hide the fact that he is in upper management in the casino industry. People don't like it when they think candidates are lying to them and there is no way in hell Scott could, or should hide his career. They said as long as Scott is honest and upfront, most people will not care and the people that will care do not usually vote Democratic anyway.

His experience in the gaming industry is at the top of his bio for one reason, because professional campaign advisers told him to put it there. He was told to be proactive, to put it out there first, and then his opponent would no longer have that drum to beat. They said people don't like it if they think you're trying to hide something, or pull one over on them.

I myself am not partial to mustaches either... but Scott's wife Sarah likes the mustache and didn't want him to shave it off. (I think the fact that Scott doesn't look much older than their teenage son without the mustache might have something to do with that.)

I have come to the conclusion that politics are too serious a matter to be left to the politicians. Charles De Gaulle (1890 - 1970)

Best wishes (4.00 / 1)
Lisa, good luck to you, Scott and Sarah.  Scott certainly will be a better representative for the people of the second district than Hoekstra.

[ Parent ]
Lie about his job? (4.00 / 1)
nothernlib, you can't possibly be suggesting that Killips should try and hide how he makes his living. As if that would even be possible. Much better to be up front and honest about it as Scott has done and show the people of the 2nd that he is no Huckster like Hoekstra. By the way, casinos are extremely popular up here and bring more people into Manistee County than one can imagine. I don't think it will play like you think.

The end of the human race will be that it will eventually die of civilization.

[ Parent ]
His job (4.00 / 1)
No, I certainly don't think he should lie about it or attempt to cover it up.  But his website goes way beyond that.  I understand that casinos are popular with people and provide jobs, but there are plenty of people who don't gamble and are anti-gaming on both the left (gaming exploits working class people) and the right (gaming is immoral).  I'm not saying I feel that way, but Scott is going to have to get a majority to win and it may not be in his best interest to trumpet, rather than just disclose, something that is likely to turn off a number of Democratic and independent voters.

I don't think a candidate of either party can win the 2nd district with a pro-gaming position being one of the strongest points of their campaign.  But that's just my simple opinion.  I very well could be wrong.

[ Parent ]
trumpet? (4.00 / 1)
I don't see his disclosing his profession on his web site as trumpeting at all. And by the way, I do not gamble and could probably be described as anti-gambling. But what people want to do with their money is their business. Obviously, gambling is very popular.

The end of the human race will be that it will eventually die of civilization.

[ Parent ]
I agree (4.00 / 1)
Mark, I don't disagree with you.  The point of my post was just to point out my thoughts on improving the website.  I didn't flame the candidate or anyone else on the blog.  I think a bit more levity is in order.  We're all on the same team.  By the way, I think Dan Scripps is a wonderful candidate and anyone who has met him can't help coming away impressed.  Scripps is bound for legislative leadership.  I wouldn't be surprised if he took over as Speaker of the House in three years and I would be very happy to see him in that position even though he's not a woman.

Ratings, troll and otherwise. (4.00 / 3)
I troll rated your comment because I was offended by the terminology.  If you'd said "cheesy mustache" or something, I wouldn't have been inclined to say much if anything.

My rating was reflective of the comment, not the person making it.

Do stupid people know they are stupid?

[ Parent ]
if my comment offended you..... (1.00 / 2)
you are far too sensitive. It must be hard living your life in a constant state of agitation. Anyway, this guy is gonna get clobbered for his gaming ties.  I don't care what Gov. Dean or some Wellstone Action clowns told him.

You don't need to be embarrassed or ashamed by what you do for a living but you don't need to lead with it either.

What? (4.00 / 3)
It must be extremely difficult being someone who radiates such intelligence, sensitivity, and respect for others yet is constantly misunderstood and troll rated.

Difficut? (0.00 / 0)
yeah i guess it is difficult but we all have our burdens in life. I could have bigger problems than being surrounded by hyper-sensitive cry-babies.

Earl, your comments, besides being insulting, could not possible more unproductive. Lead or get the hell out of the way.

Lead? (0.00 / 0)
And how are you leading?  Cause we all know blathering on the internet is incredibly productive.

leading (4.00 / 2)
I am an officer in my counties Democratic party and will be voluntering for Scott and for Dan Scripps. And how about you?

Blathering on the internet isn't terribly productive... (4.00 / 2)
But organizing a Blue Tiger Democrat program for your local county party that has built a playground and garden for the local battered women's shelter, raised thousands of dollars for the American Cancer Society, raised funds which bought books for the county's underfunded grade schools, and helped build a home for a needy family with habitat for humanity...

Or maybe raising the funds that make it possible for the Manistee County Democratic Party to be one of the few county Democratic parties in the state of Michigan that has it's own office open year-round...

Or possibly volunteering precious time and money to work towards getting Manistee County a recycling program and to make sure that our Democratic candidates have boots on the ground working for them....

Do those things count as productive? Because I can assure you that those are just a few of the many things Mark has done to build a stronger Democratic Party and to make Manistee County a better place to live. In some cases, Mark along with his wife and daughters have been the only ones to step up to the plate and help.

Mark has proven himself to be a leader time and time again; he has proven himself to be a valuable asset to the Democratic Party, and the people of his community... and I for one count myself honored to know him. He's a good egg.

I have come to the conclusion that politics are too serious a matter to be left to the politicians. Charles De Gaulle (1890 - 1970)

I second that (0.00 / 0)
That's exactly why I did that as well, and ties along with my comment above about tact.

Barstool rules... (4.00 / 2)
If I were sitting at a bar somewhere and he walked in, I'd probably turn to the guy next to me and say, "Check out dude's porn 'stache."

Obviously we're all smarter and have more depth than to allow this kind of thing actually color our perception of someone else, but we're also in a minority.

Or, do we not really understand why John Edwards and John Kerry pay hundreds of dollars for haircuts?

Best wishes for Scott (4.00 / 1)
I'm thrilled to see Scott Killips is a member of my Sault Tribe on his About page. It is always my wish to see more Native Americans elected to office. Good luck Scott, it would be fantastic for Michigan for you to win against Pete Hoekstra.
