Hoekstra flips the bird to the environment for the sake of posturing

by: LiberalLucy

Thu Oct 25, 2007 at 13:03:43 PM EDT

(Consider this an addendum to David's diary from last week.)

Pete Hoekstra, Republican Congressman from West Michigan (CD-02) and friend to DeVos/Amway and Prince/Blackwater, hates the environment so much that he's now taking on one of nature's most defenseless creatures, turtles. He's speaking out against protecting turtles and the many motorists that run across and over them every year. This from the man whose own campaign website with statements like

...we need to be involved in protecting the Great Lakes at the local, state, federal, and international levels and we need to move forward as aggressively as we can to protect them.
So why no love for the little guys and gals in shells? Probably because they can't shell out a little green to Pete's campaign fund on their own. It maybe easy to make light of a situation that deals with turtles of all things, but honestly, when you've got federal funds for projects like this, why all the whooping and hollering?

LiberalLucy :: Hoekstra flips the bird to the environment for the sake of posturing
This from the Muskegon Chronicle -

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) began work last week to install the $318,000 fence, which will extend just less than two miles from the westbound U.S. 31 Business Route exit ramp to south of M-120 on both sides of U.S. 31. The project is being funded through federal enhancement funds, which are dedicated for environmental and aesthetic improvements and can't be spent on road work.
During the spring migration, hundreds of turtles die while trying to cross the highway in search of nesting sites in the Muskegon River marsh. State officials said they believe this section of U.S. 31 is Michigan's deadliest stretch of road for turtles and statistics put it on par with some of the nation's worst turtle kill zones.
Believe it or not, this one issue has got Sneaky Pete so hopped up that he's wasting taxpayer time and money to send a letter to Governor Granholm and make hay with the press. That's right folks, the same man who promises to protect our Great Lakes environment had this to say about the project
"I am alarmed at the lack of prioritization demonstrated by this allocation of funding," U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Holland, said in a letter sent to Michigan's Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm Tuesday. "I am willing to volunteer my time and effort to help determine how to more effectively spend federal dollars coming into the state."
So why the double talk? Apparently Pete's getting bored in D.C. and his hunger for power is growing. As he announced back in May, Pete's looking towards the governor's seat for 2010. No doubt this will further fuel the internal powderkeg between the Michigan Republican's two biggest contingents, West Michigan and the SE Michigan.

Of course, Governor Granholm and her office were there to shoot one back across the bow -

Liz Boyd, the governor's chief spokeswoman, called Hoekstra's letter "a smokescreen to obscure his own voting record.
I think it's important to note that Congressman Hoekstra and his party have presided over the runaway spending in Washington," Boyd said this morning. "Why in the world would we ever take a lesson from him in how to spend money?"
Ladies and gents, I present yet another fine example of how Michigan's Republican Congressional Delegation is hard at work for you themselves.

Don't know how I missed this. Thanks, David, I'll add it to the diary!

As I said... (4.00 / 4)
...in my short and snide blog entry on the subject, the state may have some messed up priorities, but Liz Boyd's salary is money well spent. Her quote still has me laughing.

Furthermore... (4.00 / 5)
Since The Lying Dutchman has proven time and time again to be a moron, and since we're probably looking at an open seat in 2010 if not sooner...

Just in case this hasn't already been said.... (4.00 / 2)
Pete Hoekstra is a d**chebag.

There, it had to be said.

Courtesy of the Chronicle, which is actually proving itself to be rather useful during Turtlegate:

The project is being funded through federal enhancement funds, which are dedicated for environmental and aesthetic improvements and can't be spent on road work.

So this money is to be used to mitigate the environmental effect of having roads, and the state is using it to...mitigate the environmental effects of having roads. Positively shocking, and the governor and MDOT should be ashamed of themselves.  /snark

Once again, Pete Ho is right on top of things.

Ugh (4.00 / 4)
This is all diversionary tactics. Notice the time span from his no vote on SCHIP veto override to his press release on "turtlegate" and his media blitz as of late leading to today's SCHIP vote....when he voted NO...AGAIN!!!

"Kill the headlights and put it in neutral..."

Hoekstra a near zero (4.00 / 2)
Anyone familiar with Hoekstra's environmental record shouldn't be surprised that he's added turtles to his list of species he wishes to endanger.  During the last Congress he had a 3% League of Conservation Voters environmental score--tied with Joe Knollenberg for Michigan's worst.  For all his bluster about wanting to protect the Great Lakes, he has refused to support the proposed Clean Water Restoration Act which would protect all of the Great Lakes ecosystem waters.

Defenseless creatures? (4.00 / 2)
Love the "turtlegate" stuff, and turtles.  Indeed, I picked up a baby snapper the other day that was trying to cross a busy campus sidewalk, and gently deposited it on the "Banks of the Red Cedar."  Just by way of being silly, I think they are among nature's best defended creatures, what with the shell, and the ability to hide inside it and all.

In the words of Groundkeeper Willie:  "must save the wee turtles"!
