Breaking: Dems to back Jan. 15 primary (maybe)

by: Eric B.

Wed Nov 14, 2007 at 17:20:29 PM EST

From MIRS:
Michigan Democratic Chair Mark BREWER this afternoon informed Secretary of State Terri Lynn LAND's office that the party will use the presidential primary on Jan. 15 under certain conditions.

The conditions include: if Judge William Collette's decision declaring the primary law unconstitutional is overturned and if the Michigan Republican Party uses the Jan. 15 primary to select their delegates.

Today was the deadline under the law by which the party's would have to pull out of the primary.

Did You contact the MDP? (4.00 / 1)
It may have helped if some of those verbatim emails to the MDP had been from MDP members.

I heard this was coming, but am still (4.00 / 2)
disgusted by it.  Brewer had a chance to save face and withdraw the party from this fiasco, and chose not to. I guess my phone calls and emails to the party office fell on deaf ears, once again.

How long do they want to drag this out?

All things are possible (4.00 / 1)
This could be a sop to Granholm.  Perhaps folks realize that the appeal of the ruling will be upheld and the primary bill will remain unconstitutional.

If not, it's interesting that Brewer went against the majority of the Democratic Senate Caucus.

Coincidently, I got a fundraising letter (4.00 / 2)
from Mark Brewer in the mail today.

Don't count on a donation Mark, not after this.

I guess we will see how politically active (4.00 / 2)
Michigan progressives are.

Eric (4.00 / 1)
Please post a copy of the letter.

Impeach Mark "Saul Jr." Brewer (1.00 / 1)
  Or at least consider it.

  May diary about that later.

What a disaster (4.00 / 3)
No one has mentioned these games of primary leap frog essentially prevent any sort of grass roots or retail campaigns.  For all we know Michigan could wake up tomorrow to find that it's primary day.  This entire clustf%#* makes it hard for the average voter to make an intelligent informed decision in a primary or caucus.

Exactly, we could all be campaigning (3.25 / 4)
now, not just the candidates and the official campaigns, but the grassroots.

Michigan is losing out with this inept leadership.

Court of Appeals has allowed the emergency appeal (4.00 / 5)
Oral argument will be heard by a panel of the Court of Appeals will be held Thursday, Nov 15, in the courtroom of the Supreme Court, at 1pm.

I'm too tired to describe the pleadings on both sides, but let's just say they haven't discovered anything new - just the same old challenges to the plaintiffs' standing, and a suggestion that exclusive control of the voter list isn't a form of "property".

A decision is expected Friday, which Saul and Terry are promoting as the new drop-dead date.

Thank you Mark (4.00 / 3)
Bullshit recycled is still bullshit.  BTW, a little lesson for all michliberals: Republicans love to challenge standing.  They want to close the doors of the courthouse to all but a favored few.

I would think (4.00 / 2)
ANY MICHIGAN TAXPAYER would have standing.

But what do I know?

[ Parent ]
Over the last 25 years you would be (4.00 / 1)
shocked at how standing has been whittled away.

Not So Fast... (4.00 / 2)
Brewer informing Land just gives us the option of participating in the primary...it doesn't necessarily mean that we will use the primary to allocate delegates. The February 9th Caucus is still an option also. Today kept the door open for the primary, no real decision has been made yet.

True (4.00 / 1)

The Three Judges Hearing the Appeal (4.00 / 2)
All three are Engler appointees.  They are hearing an appeal from AG Cox (Republican) about a Bishop-McManus-Hardiman (all Republicans) Bill.

And some Democrats want to follow this group.  The incompetence is overwhelming.

Patrick M. Meter
Judge Meter was appointed to the Court in 1999. Previously, he served as a judge of the Saginaw Circuit Court, and he worked as a prosecuting attorney for Saginaw County and as an attorney in private practice. Judge Meter received his bachelor's and law degrees from the University of Notre Dame.
Term expires January 1, 2009.

William C. Whitbeck
Chief Judge Whitbeck was appointed to the Court in 1997 and reelected to six-year terms in 1998 and 2004. Previously, he was director of the Office of State Employer, director of policy for the Public Service Commission, director of the Detroit area office for the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, an administrative assistant to Governor George Romney, a legislative analyst for the Department of Commerce, and worked as an attorney in private practice. Chief Judge Whitbeck received his bachelor's degree from Northwestern University and his law degree from the University of Michigan. The Supreme Court appointed Judge Whitbeck as Chief Judge in 2001 for a two-year term. He was reappointed for additional two-year terms as Chief Judge in 2003 and 2005.
Term expires January 1, 2011.

Donald S. Owens
Judge Owens was appointed to the Court in 1999 and elected in 2000. Previously, he served as judge of the Ingham County Probate Court since 1974. Before that, he was an attorney in private practice in Lansing. Judge Owens received his bachelor's, master's and law degrees from the University of Michigan.
Term expires, January 1, 2011.
