Monday Coffee Talk

by: JPowers155

Mon Feb 25, 2008 at 07:38:36 AM EST

Good morning and welcome to Monday. For those of you suffering from an Oscar-induced hangover, today's links will have 50% fewer montages and 75% less song and dance numbers. For the rest of you... grab some caffeine and see what's happening out there.

Michiganians in the News

  • Jackson Cit Pat: A Tale of Two Politicians. Democratic Representatives Griffin and Simpson get the star treatment in this profile of the two men who broke the GOP's hold on Jackson County politics.
  • YAF Watch: Bristow Resigns as Chair of MSU YAF. Someone stop me from singing "ding dong the hate group leader is gone". Alas, he's just turning the reigns over to a new generation of hate groupies.  Someone let the Pigman know.
  • Mad at Thad: Tom Spencer Re-Enters Race. There's a contested Democratic primary to get into the race against Thaddeus. Could it be that a whole lot of people think he isn't doing his district much good?
  • MI Public Radio: Granholm Named to National Leadership Position. Our Gov is now the 2nd in command for the Midwestern Governors Association. Bet she could arm wrestle South Dakota for the top spot.
  • AP: Douglas Fraser, Former UAW President, Dies at 91. Hat tip to Scotty for posting this yesterday. The man who led the UAW during the 70s and 80s died late Saturday night in Southfield.
State News & Politics
  • LSJ: License Opinion Leads to State Damage. The recent kerfluffle over driver's licenses has left someone with egg on his (or her) face. Either way, Michigan's business community isn't pleased.
  • Det News: Gay Leaders Seeks More Candidates of Color. There's a new, national push to bring gay politicians of color into public office. And about damned time, too.
  • AP: Granholm Expects Resolution Before Convention on Michigan Delegates. The Gov thinks we'll get our delegates seated at Convention but more importantly, she says the "...bottom line is we need to focus as Democrats on getting out the vote, whoever it is."
  • TC Record Eagle: More Calls for Judicial Reform. "A study by the National Institute on Money in State Politics said that in 86 percent of all cases heard by Michigan's high court, at least one campaign contributor was involved."
Get Smart
  • Freep: Elevate Higher Ed: New Aid Formula Helps, but There's More to Do. The Governor's new proposal will add a welcome (but small) increase in aid for state colleges and universities but can they deliver on the required outcomes?
  • Far Left Field: College Scholarship. Opportunities abound for the political savvy student. Current college students and high school seniors only, please.
  • DetNews: Detroit Schools Grad Rate 32%. A controversial new study is revealing "shockingly low" graduation rates for large, urban cities across the country. The only solace is that the graduation rate is higher than the current occupant of the White House's approval rating.
Business & Environment Report
  • MITF: Michigan Development News. Check out this week's wrap of what's developing out there in Michigan. The economy is causing real challenges for our great state, that's for sure.
  • Muskegon Chronicle: State's Gold is in Michigan's Environmental Resources. Can you put a price on sand dunes and wetlands? Apparently now you can, via a new study that says West Michigan's natural resources are worth more than a billion dollars.
  • Freep: Oops! State has no Law to Enforce High-Occupancy Lanes. Many large cities have special lanes where cars with 2+ riders can zip past everyone else. It's a great way to help the environment but unfortunately... Michigan law has no provision for ticketing violators.
  • GR Press: Great Lakes Water Rules. Dear Michigan Legislators: Please ratify the Great Lakes Compact and while you're at it, pass some decent legislation protecting Michigan's water. You know, do your jobs. Sincerely, the people of Michigan.
  • Port Huron Times Herald: Counties Working to Attract Green Energy Companies. Wind power, ethanol and solar energy are just a few of the industries that the Thumb area is trying to attract in order to bring jobs to the local communities.
Cities & Towns in the News
  • Flint News: From Surplus to Deficit. What Happened in Flint? Skyrocketing health care costs and a recent audit have revealed a significant deficit for Flint but city officials are optimistic about the future.
  • Bay City Times: Tri-Cities Hospitals Running Near Capacity with Complaints of Flu Symptoms. Still putting off that flu shot? If you live in Bay City, Saginaw or Midland, you might want to get one - ASAP.
  • Northern Express: Meijer & the Village. Meijer and the village of Acme have apparently buried the hatchet now that Meijer admitted that they tried to illegally influence the election. What's next? Looks like a Disney-esque resort that will change the tiny village of Acme forever.
Calendar Check Go forth. Do good. Talk amongst yourselves in the comments.
