2010 Statewide Candidates- who want the job!!

by: progressive Mich

Tue Apr 22, 2008 at 12:56:43 PM EDT

Mirs had a recent article regarding our previous 2006 Democratic nominee for Attorney General that I found quite interesting:

"Williams Says 'No' To A.G. Bid"

'Williams confessed he never had any "burning desire" to run for A.G. in the first place...'

I think it is no wonder why we lost the AG spot to such a weakened opponent like Cox when we hear our candidates didn't even want the job in the first place.

With that said, what list of potential candidates are considering runs for the statewide offices of Gov, AG, and SS in 2010?

It seemed like a good idea at the time...much like the GOP were dead sure Amway Dick would beat a "weakened" Granholm.

Amos Williams - How We Win Narrative

Money.  The ability to raise sufficient dollars to run a competitive race for Attorney General without compromising the money needed to assure that the Governor can raise adequate dollars to insure her reelection is certainly the most daunting task of the Williams campaign.

We can do it! Amos Williams will build a coalition of individuals and groups ready to support the candidacy of a strong charismatic African American candidate with unique appeal to: pro choice groups, out state African American leadership, Veterans Pacs and lawmakers, the disability community, Trial lawyers and law enforcement.

We are prepared!  Amos Williams is already in communication with many of the aforementioned groups who are ready and willing to sign on once the nomination is complete.  Just some of the groups we are in contact with include:  Hopefund, VETPAC, and Democracy for America, the Progressive Majority, NARAL, and Planned Parenthood Pac.

We have specifics!  We already have specific commitments including date and time for campaign fund raising events in Atlanta, Washington DC and Chicago.  Our hosts include:  Carol Mosely Braun, Senator Max Cleeland and others.

Raising money alone is not enough to win the race - a message we are all planning to send home to Dick DeVos in November.  You must have a candidate who will be at the right places at the right time to motivate the voters we need for a successful win for the entire Democratic slate.

Amos Williams is that candidate.  Our analysis of the race suggests that Amos can not only defeat Cox but be a MAJOR asset in the Governors re-election bid by concentrating his personal appearances and field organization in the base vote community.  We all know that if Democrats vote -Democrats win.

Amos will begin an aggressive campaign of bringing his message (and the Governors) to the minority community the week after the convention. Amos Williams has the strong support of Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick who is committed to seeing a Williams victory in November.  He will spend every Sunday (and most Wednesdays) in African American churches in targeted base communities.  He will challenge the membership to send a message to Lansing that it is time for an African American leader to protect and defend the rights of Michigan's citizens.   Amos Williams can and will Get Out The Vote in the cities where the vote is important...no other potential candidate on the statewide scene can or will deliver that vote.

Amos Williams is committed to a Granholm Victory in November.  Amos Williams will stand by the Governors side and send them message loud and clear to the base community in Detroit, in Flint, in Lansing, in Benton Harbor and across the state that Jennifer Granholm is THEIR candidate in November.

In Wayne County alone, there were 300,000 more voters in the 04 presidential elections then in the 02 Governors race.   A strong Williams candidacy can and will target the drop off voters from the Presidential race in our urban communities.  These motivated voters will make the difference for Granholm and Williams in November.  The Williams campaign is prepared with a detailed field that targets the voters we need and ready to have feet on the ground August 28th.

Finally, the Williams campaign is the likely nominee at the August convention and the strong frontrunner among Democratic activists - the people needed to create a high energy statewide campaign.  When Amos Williams took the stage at the February convention, Scott Bowen was the presumptive nominee.  In five short months Amos Williams has not only leveled the playing field but is considered a frontrunner by many 'in the know."  Williams delegate tracking shows him ahead 6 fold among convention attendees with leads of 6 to 1 delegate +'s in Wayne, 10 to 1 in Oakland, and 2 to 1 in Bowen's own Kent County.  Williams has endorsements from Kalamazoo, Van Buren and Berrien county Democratic organizations - organizations that are in Bowen's own back yard.

Williams amazing statewide support among rank and file Democrats is just more indication that he has what it takes to put together a strong grassroots campaign - the kind money alone can't buy - the kind Jennifer Granholm must have to beat Dick DeVos and the kind Williams will bring to a defeat of Mike Cox come November.

How much of this would have gone away (4.00 / 2)
if we simply selected the AG, SOS, and Supreme Court nominees via primary, instead of at the Convention.

They would have been able to back those claims up simply by winning the primary, which requires all the things you listed.

Nominating candidates at the state convention is a prescription for disaster (electoral that is)

couldn't agree with you more!...I'd rather win in Nov. & primaries would help that (0.00 / 0)

Giving Scott Bowen Credit (0.00 / 0)
Well, the reason why I posted was to figure out who is considering running AND who is committed to do whatever it takes to get the job. You have to give Scott Bowen credit for doing all that he could to get the AG spot even after Kwamie through his power play in with the governor.

So, who is considering these offices and how can we be sure that it won't be another Amos Williams who doesn't have his heart in the race...

I have to disagree with you there (0.00 / 0)
One of the reasons Amos Williams won the nomination was because he actually worked the state.  You know, areas north of Grand Rapids and stuff.  I can assure you Kwame Kilpatrick has ZERO influence up in these parts.

The people of the north really appreciated that there was a candidate willing to go to all the trouble of traveling outside of the bubble to ask for their support.  If Bowen takes another shot at it I hope he doesn't repeat his mistake from last time.

I received several mailings and at least one phone call from Williams and zilch from Bowen.

Make a good point (0.00 / 0)
I don't agree with the idea that Bowen wasn't working the entire state. I know Bowen was all over the state and had many calls and mailers going out.

But Julie does bring up a good point. If Bowen runs again, then he is going to have to do a better job of canvassing the state more. Considering it was his first time running for statewide office, it is safe to assume that he would learn from his earlier mistakes if he were to run again.

John Cherry and his minions had a real hand in sticking it too Bowen. TRUTH.

Cherry among others (0.00 / 0)
I never heard any direct part that Cherry had in bringing down Bowen's AG run, but it doesn't surprise me considering how many weird allies formed (i.e. Kwamie-Cox-who knows who else) to bring down what looked to be a promising candidate.

Speaking of Cherry, I have heard the possibility of him running for Gov too. I am not sure if that is true, but I can't imagine that he'd be considered the best option.

Dennis Archer for Governor (4.00 / 2)
imagine it...feel it, make it happen...

Dianne Byrum for Lt. Gov. (let's pick someone who can run after the current gov wins...ehm)

Archer for AG (0.00 / 0)

Lt. Governor Cherry (0.00 / 0)
I think the Lt. Governor would be a great candidate for Governor. He has an everyman appeal that can win votes in more conservative areas of the state. He also has the ability reach across the aisle to get things done.He might not be as charismatic as Governor Granholm but he might appeal to different segments of the population.

I thinks Diane Byrum would make a good candidate for Secretary of State

for AG many of the names mentioned (Bowen, Whitmer, Archer) would be good candidates. Also, Eric Smith might help in Macomb if he is still popular haven't heard much about him lately. Or maybe Kym Worthy to add some Detroit controversy to the mix....lol

Stupak (0.00 / 0)
I think Stupak is on the list for potential AG candidates as well.

Dillon. (4.00 / 1)
I'd like to see him run for AG and Archer run for Governor.

Putting conservatives in charge of our government makes about as much sense as GM hiring a CEO who hates cars.

Gretchen Whitmer (4.00 / 1)
I'd heard Senator Gretchen Whitmer was being considered for a run.

Archer & Bowen (0.00 / 0)
I like the idea of Archer for Gov, assuming he is interested. It is hard not to be impressed by Archer's resume.

As for AG, I am inclined to lean towards Bowen, assuming he is interested...I really would have liked to see what he could have done in a general election. Plus, I am sick of the democratic party conceding the west side of the state to republicans. As a former West MI resident, I know firsthand that there is a growing swell of democrats over there waiting to be recognized and appreciated.
