The goat killer vs. Michigan's Native Americans

by: Eric B.

Mon Jun 02, 2008 at 14:56:21 PM EDT

( - promoted by Eric B.)

Dave Agema follows in the footsteps of other lawmakers in calling for an end to tuition waivers for Native Americans attending Michigan's colleges and universities.

Agema also questioned whether the waivers violate Proposal 2, a 2007 amendment to the state Constitution that prohibits preferential treatment in public education on the basis of race or gender. He has asked Attorney General Mike Cox for a legal opinion.

Hilarious.  I wonder if the goat killer understands what a can of worms he's potentially opening with this.  Supposing Mike Cox comes back and reports that this is indeed a violation of Proposal 2, how long before the tribes -- flush with casino money -- drag Proposal 2, their treaties and whatever team of high-priced lawyers they dig up into federal court to argue that Proposal 2 violates a federally-recognized treaty with another sovereign power.

Ignorance (4.00 / 3)
Agema is just showing his ignorance of the legal relationship between the U.S. government and Indian tribes. On the other hand, this is typical of the policy positions of the Republican party in order to keep it the party of Straight White Males, preferably men.

This is horsecrap! (4.00 / 2)
My fiance is part Native American.  She wouldn't have been able to pay for college without help from her reservation.

That these morons want to keep kids from getting a college degree in these times shows a strong idocy on behalf of the right wing.

Putting conservatives in charge of our government makes about as much sense as GM hiring a CEO who hates cars.

I thought that was a settlement agreement (0.00 / 0)
I had heard that the tuition waivers were the result of some legal settlement between the state and the tribes over land taken illegally.

Anyone know for certain why the waivers were their in the first place. If it was a settlement, does that make it different than an affirmative action policy, or perhaps it's grandfathered in?

Hardly anything new (4.00 / 1)
Fiscal conservatives have been trying to eliminate the Michigan Indian Tuition Waiver for years now. Each year, their efforts have failed, but they've also been getting closer to doing it.

For now, Governor Granholm has been a defender of the program, as has Senator Deb Cherry.

I haven't heard if AG Cox has published his opinion, but I do know the Michigan Department of Civil Rights has declared Native American status to be a political designation, not a racial one.

Sadly, I do believe the MITW's days are numbered.
