Protecting the Great Lakes: Day 1

by: jcherry

Wed Jul 09, 2008 at 07:52:38 AM EDT

(Excellent! Thank you Lt. Gov. Cherry!! - promoted by LiberalLucy)

Good morning, Michigan Liberal bloggers and readers!  Today, I'm beginning a trip to coastal towns throughout Michigan to highlight the importance of preserving and restoring our greatest natural resource, the Great Lakes.  I'm planning to post additional entries along the way, and hope you will join me by sharing your thoughts about my tour, our lakes and our other critical water resources.

Our lakes are not only a beautiful treasure, but are also a key component of Michigan's - and the Midwest's - economy.   Our lakes provide recreation, jobs, drinking water, food, commercial navigation and water resources that help sustain industries and utilities.

Additionally, tourism in Michigan thrives along the water's edge.  Both Michiganders and our friends from out of state flock to the bountiful waters of our 5 Great Lakes and more than 11,000 inland lakes to relax and enjoy the natural beauty our State has to offer.

jcherry :: Protecting the Great Lakes: Day 1
For these reasons, we are obligated to do all we can to ensure that our lakes are protected and restored.  Decades of contamination from invasive species and waste coupled with an aging infrastructure have left much work ahead in our efforts to fully clean, restore and further protect our lakes.

Michigan has already stepped up to invest millions of dollars in this effort but we can't stop here.  The Governor and I have urged federal lawmakers to reauthorize the Great Lakes Legacy Act which will preserve federal funds for this work and Congress has recognized the importance of the Great Lakes to not only Michigan but the entire United States.  Michigan needs the federal government to be our committed and fervent partner in the work ahead.

As I said earlier, this week I'll be traveling Michigan to highlight the importance of protecting our lakes and raise awareness of both the challenges we face and of the successes we have achieved.

This morning, I begin my travels in Port Huron at the Healthy Lakes, Healthy Lives Boat Tour where I will join local officials to celebrate our water and advocate for urgent action in restoration.

I will then travel across the State to Benton Harbor and will spend the remainder of my week journeying up Michigan's West Coast along beautiful Lake Michigan to visit the communities of Benton Harbor, St. Joseph, Muskegon, and Traverse City.  I will also have the chance to meet with local Democrats in Allegan and Berrien counties as well as Leelanau County to support State Representative Candidate Dan Scripps.

On Thursday I will join local officials in the Benton Harbor area at the majestic Warren Dunes State Park to discuss restoration efforts and how the Park will benefit.

Friday will be a full day in Muskegon where I will visit Muskegon Lake to announce an exciting new project that will help reverse years of neglect and damage to this lake - a hidden jewel of West Michigan.  I'll finish the day by attending a fundraiser for Dan Scripps in Leelanau County.

My travel for the week concludes on Saturday in Traverse City where I will be attending Cherry Festival festivities including the Cherry Festival Parade.  As you can imagine, I always feel quite at home in Traverse City during the Cherry Festival!

And later in July and August, I'll be traveling to communities in the Upper Peninsula, the northeastern Lower Peninsula, the Saginaw Bay area, Macomb County, Detroit and Downriver.

Stay tuned as I will continue to update throughout the week.  Please share with me any thoughts or ideas that come to mind.  I look forward to reading your comments on this very important issue.

Great Lake State (4.00 / 2)
The Lt Governor has addressed one of the most important issues for Michigan. We often take our Great Lakes and abundance of water for granted, an easy thing to do considering that they have always been there providing drinking water, trade, tourism revenues, and a release from everyday stress. Continued negligence in our stewardship of these great ecosystems will lead to economic and ecological ruin. The Great Lakes surround our state and define our borders, but they have also lent us a unique cultural and economic identity. The restoration and preservation initiatives mentioned in this post are just what we need to ensure that the Great Lakes will be great for future generations.

Leadership (4.00 / 2)
John Cherry has shown leadership on this issue but the problem remains a lack of enthusiasm and funding from the federal government. The League of Conservation Voters gave John McCain a lifetime rating of 26% for his stance on issues of conservation compared to Barack Obama's 96%: it's clear what difference a change in Washington is going to make on this issue.

Touching on two of the most important issues in Michigan and federal politics (climate change and the economy) it is vital that the progress being made by the Lieutenant-Governor continues.

Great Idea (4.00 / 2)
I commend the Lt. Gov. for taking time to publicly acknowledge the beauty and economic importance of our Great Lakes.  Instead of taking the summer off, John Cherry is using his time to heighten awareness of our region's most valuable resource.  I appreciate his time and commitment to improving our state.  I think that we should all take note that with high gas prices, and our challenged economy, we don't need to travel far to take family vacations.  By saving money, we are also bettering our state through stimulating local economies.

Thank You (4.00 / 2)
Thank you Lt. Governor Cherry for stopping by and posting your thoughts on our state's greatest asset: water. We derive so many benefits from being surrounded by the Great Lakes. We need to protect them.

Oh yeah... (4.00 / 2)
Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts with us.

You should come to Sault Ste. Marie Senator Cherry.

Inspiring Dedication (4.00 / 2)
John Cherry's enthusiasm for protecting and preserving Michigan's Great Lakes, one of our state's greatest assets, is inspiring.  Not only fighting for federal funds and attention, but taking this vital issue into his own hands by traveling Michigan and raising awareness shows that the Lt. Gov. realizes how important our lakes are.  The condition of Great Lakes effects the state of our economy, Michigan's distinct culture and beauty, and in turn, every Michigan citizen. Cherry's dedication shows that he is a politician fighting for our best interest.

Great Lakes (4.00 / 2)
As a person who lives on one of our lakes. Thank you Lt. Governor. If anyone can save our Lakes. You Can. You have shown great leadership with the Education. I know you will have great leadership with our LAKES.

Scripps fundraiser (0.00 / 0)
