Saturday in Traverse City

Mon Jul 14, 2008 at 14:04:22 PM EDT

(Another report from the Lt. Governor on the last leg of his tour. Thanks, LG! - promoted by LiberalLucy)

We started out Saturday at the Grand Traverse County Democratic Governor's Breakfast in Traverse City.  This is an annual event to kick off Saturday's National Cherry Festival activities.  Paul Bare chaired the event this year and Diana Ketola, the County Party Chair, MC'd the breakfast.  There was a great turnout this year, which may say something about Democratic energy in 2008.  Local Democrats are focused, ready to go, and have fielded some great candidates.  Andy Concannon is the Congressional candidate and local Democrats have a great State Rep candidate-Roman Grucz.  Like Dan Scripps and the Rep seat to the west, Roman ran a close race last year and this year he is contesting for an open seat.

Senator Carl Levin was the morning's keynote speaker.  He pumped the crowd up, and talked about the dramatic moment in the United States Senate last week when Senator Ted Kennedy returned to the Senate floor to cast the deciding vote to bring an end to the filibuster on the Medicaid appropriation.  Democrats have struggled the past two years to muster the 60 votes to break filibusters on critical issues that advance the Democratic Agenda.  For the most part, they have regularly fallen short, but not this time.  With Ted Kennedy present, they broke the filibuster and went on to pass the Medicaid appropriation with a comfortable majority.  This all shows you how legislators often hide behind procedural votes; but when you can't hide any longer and the light of day shines strong, justice can prevail.

jcherry :: Saturday in Traverse City
After the breakfast, I traveled to the parade line up to find the vehicle that I was to ride the parade in.  While waiting for the parade to start, I had the opportunity to visit with other parade participants and this year's parade organizers.  I was able to taste a piece of the huge cherry pie produced by the Grand Traverse Pie Company to celebrate this year's Festival.  The Grand Traverse Pie Company is a growing Michigan business, and they have a great lineup of products.  I understand that this year they will begin expanding outside of Michigan.  Hopefully, those new outlets will be great advertising for Michigan and the quality of life in our Great Lakes State!

I also ran into Greg McMasters, a local media personality, who introduced me to a new attraction in the Grand Traverse Bay Area.  The Grand Traverse Bay Underwater Preserve Council has mapped out 19 separate sites of shipwrecks.  They recently received, with the Governor's assistance, designation as an underwater preserve.  The preserve status will allow the Council to protect the sites so they will continue to be available to the public for research and educational purposes.

At about 11:00 am the parade launched off under fair skies and with a huge crowd lining the parade route through the downtown.  I was near the front of the parade right behind the Grand Traverse Pipe and Drum Corp.  Being of Scots-Irish descent, it is always a treat to follow the pipes and this was no exception.  For the spectators, the parade must have been fun to watch.  I know that a number of high school bands from across the state participated in the National Cherry Festival.  There were so many units that after I finished, Pam and I had lunch and when we came out of the restaurant, the parade was still in progress.

The National Cherry Festival is symbolic of the magnetic effect that the Great Lakes have.  Thousands of individuals from all over Michigan and the Nation traveled over the highways, through the air, and across the water to come to Traverse City to participate in this great event.  The community rolled out the carpet of hospitality and created a special weekend on the shores of Grand Traverse Bay.  It all helps to support industries based on recreation, hospitality, and culture.  It represents a face of Michigan that we all take great pride in.  Without healthy Lakes, that magnetic magic would begin to wane.  It is one of the reasons that we struggle to clean up watersheds in Berrien County and remediate toxic hot spots in Muskegon.

I had a wonderful time traveling to coastal cities in Michigan last week and meeting people who are enthusiastic about restoring our lakes.  I look forward to continuing my tour of the Great Lakes later this month and into August, when I'll be traveling to Bay City, Southeastern Michigan (including Macomb County, Detroit and the Downriver area), the UP, and the northeastern Lower Peninsula.  I'll continue to update you on my travels, and hope to hear from you as well. It was a splendid event. (4.00 / 1)
We were so glad you could come join us for the breakfast and the parade afterward.  It was wonderful to hear from so many hard working Dems who are running for office this year.

Also in attendance were Mark Brewer, who did a great job as always and Mike Kelly, candidate for the Court of Appeals--4th district.  He's the only card carrying Dem in the race and an all around good guy.  He ran in 04 and lost by less than 3% against 2 incumbants.  (Disclaimer:  I am working on his campaign)

The morning started out a bit rainy but things cleared up in time for the parade.  Elected officals like Lt. Gov. Cherry are able to participate in the parade but those who are only candidates walk the route giving out swag and meeting voters before the parade starts.  It's really a lot of fun, tons of people!  Lots of excited kids, tired but happy parents, melting popsicles and the like.

So glad some of our great Dem elected officials could make it and that so many of the candidates worked the huge crowd.  Did you know we have some half million visitors to Traverse City during Cherry Festival week?  We throw a helluva party up here!  If you've not been try to make it next year.  Representatives Grucz and Scripps will probably be in the parade.  :)

To prepare for when your life flashes before your eyes, make sure it's fun to watch.

Environment meets industry (4.00 / 1)
The Lt Governor makes a good point that the health of our Great Lakes determines economic prosperity for a great number of Michiganders. The hallmark of any great society is a strong infrastructure. While no one ever built the Great Lakes, they are crucial to commercial development. We have been given a great gift, one we must take care of.
