Friday Coffee Talk/Open Thread

by: rich

Fri Jul 18, 2008 at 08:28:43 AM EDT

Good morning. It's Friday. A few hours until the weekend begins. Take a dive into this mornings cup-o-links.

The Guv

  • AP: Mich. governor enjoys her morning bus ride to work. Governor Granholm took the bus to work yesterday. She says she would like to see more public transit in the state. So would I.
  • LSJ: Tim Skubick: Granholm's trapped in same ol' day. "The Granholm years to date have been plagued by an economy that refused to give her a break. Undaunted, she seeks to do what others did not: diversify the state's auto-dominated economy."

Sen. McCain

  • Michigan Messenger: McCain's host today in Grand Rapids once known for sexist remarks, now focuses on gambling. Remember Republican fundraiser Pete Secchia? Here's a refresher.
  • WMR: Once Again, McCain Unable to Fill VanAndel Arena. “As before, John McCain will not be holding a single public event or hearing from any regular voters.  He's just jetting in for a much-needed infusion of cash, and then jetting out.”
RMGN Proposal
  • Capitol Journal: Epic fail. Conservatives have been arguing that the RMGN proposal was a Democratic trick. “But who could have imagined the Dems would be so stupid as to not only admit that, but create a PowerPoint presentation to show exactly how the ruse was intended to work! The slideshow, posted on a UAW website, was discovered and published by the Mackinac Center for Public Policy."
  • Michigan Political Report: Peter Luke: Memo pins reform proposal on Democrats. More on the PowerPoint presentation titled, "Government Reform Proposal: Changing the rules of politics in Michigan to help Democrats."
Oil and Justice
  • Freep: Michigan's growing oil boom. What? There's oil here? I can just see the Republicans next slogan: "An Oil Derrick in Every Backyard!"
  • Detroit News: Judge greenlights first Gitmo trial. Talk about fair and speedy...

Giving Thanks

Lots of great stuff today! (4.00 / 4)
And with all the shout-outs MichLib gets from this "on-line only" (no mystery there) columnist, surely it gives a nice boost to our readership.

Between the winger whine and the WMR bit on McCain's inability to draw a crowd, today's CT sure is a fun break from the business of the day.

Happy Friday to all.

Julie

Today's Netroots Nation thought... (4.00 / 4)
I don't have the energy to pseudo-liveblog like I did yesterday, so let me just share this thought:

Marcy Wheeler is a total rockstar.

Great ink from Netroots Nation (4.00 / 2)
I just got this from a writer at the Texas Observer on the Womens Caucus that I led yesterday -

The Blogosphere's Boys Club - there's even a great link to MichLib - whoot!

I want to change the world, not help people adjust to it. - Millie Jeffrey, MI - National Women's labor and Democratic activist, Presidential Medal of Freedom Recipient

Get a clue Demas (4.00 / 3)
Susan Demas needs to spend more time reporting and less time lecturing progressives. Her "everyone loves Patty!" view of Patty Birkholz is off-base. I'm sure everyone in the media circles loves Patty. But the Patty of the past who actually held some responsible environmental views isn't the Senator who's been voting for the past couple of years to obstruct real efforts to protect the environment. Demas appears to be afflicted by a Lansing version of Broderism where reporters who get too enamored of the politicians they cover reflexively defend any attacks on them even when those politicians like Senator Birkholz are in the wrong.
