The column I hope I haven't just doomed

Sun Feb 08, 2009 at 00:09:44 AM EST

Peter Hoekstra didn't just put the twit in Twitter (my nomination for best headline for like the last billion years).  He's also mentioned prominently, like all the time, when people talk about the gubernatorial race in 2010.

Hoekstra's flub has finally sprouted up on the state's newspapers.  The first story appears to be a denial from Hoekstra's office in the Grand Rapids, Muskegon, and Holland papers, which certainly brings with it some benefits on how to frame the issue.  The fact that a potential candidate for governor, while as a Congressman on the national security committee, potentially violate national security is something neither the Free Press nor the News appear to think worth pointing out to their readers.

It's because of the reality of the situation that I think certainly someone prominent needs to probe what potential impact this might have on Hoekstra's potential bid to be governor.  I hate to be That Blogger, but if it were a Democrat or pseudo-liberal politician who'd done this, you'd probably see the issue explored by what passes for Michigan's pundit class.  Perhaps Tim Skubick has put the question to this week's panel for Off The Record, but this is clearly something Hoekstra's opponents -- in the primary and in the general election -- will bring up.

Oh, it gets better... (4.00 / 1)
Earlier today I posted the following comment at BFM:

That's absolutely hysterical. I found Pete's Twitter feed about a week ago, and srsly the guy's a laugh a minute. I don't know whether it's Pete himself that's doing the tweeting or whether they're paying a staffer to do it, but the tweets are rife with spelling and grammar issues, and show a total lack of understanding of the point of Twitter. It's like someone on his staff went to a social media workshop and said "Ooooh a new toy!" and got a little overzealous.

Then later tonight Pete tweeted:

Love twitter critics.Spelling mistakes. Sorry but riding in poor light, bouncing around, speed not accuracy. Lighten up. Its called twitter

I think I got under the poor guy's skin. It's okay, Pete...I've actually had my fair share of typos in my tweets. I never disclosed the secret whereabouts of a congressional delegation headed to Baghdad, but occasionally my clicky finger gets ahead of my typing fingers...

FWIW:

Pete's  rep denies the trip was ever supposed to be a secret:

"We never agreed to anything as far as not discussing it (beforehand) or during," Yonkman said. "Congressman Hoekstra believes in giving people in West Michigan as much information as possible."

I'm glad Hoekstra is so dedicated to informing the Michigan Publc (4.00 / 1)
I only want the answer to one question about Iraq: When is the United States military leaving?

America either revives its industrial base or it dies. There is no future for people in a post industrial America.

And we all know, no terrorists in West Michigan (0.00 / 0)
this is pretty much the definition of parochial: putting the needs of your home-boys and local political chances against those of your country. A real patriot, that Pete.
