Election Results Thread

by: PerfectStormer

Tue May 05, 2009 at 22:36:01 PM EDT

Consider this your official MichLib May Elections open thread. Post links to results from your neck of the woods, and feel free to cheer (or grouse) about election results from all over the state.

  • First up, The Freep is reporting that Dave Bing has won the Detroit mayoral race 52-48, with 99% of precincts reporting.
  • The so-called Silver Line bus expansion in Grand Rapids has gone down in flames 59-41.
  • Yet another library millage fails, this time in Bloomfield Hills. Color me shocked.
What else is going on in your neck of the woods? Post a comment and let us know.

Kalamazoo - Yay!! (4.00 / 1)
County Transit passes, 13,000 to 7500 (round numbers) with 95% in. This is the campaign I've been working on. It failed last fall; with a more restricted (and better informed) electorate, it passes easily, in spite of a large number of absentee votes, which traditionally has been bad news for millages. I think that equation has changed with the increase in absentee voting.

Kalamazoo Library millage passes, 8,000 to 2,500. This is a smaller area than the county. It is a renewal of the operating millage. Kalamazoo has the second highest library millage rate in the state.

KPS Board: veteran teacher Ervin Armstrong defeats volunteer Paula Norder, 4600 to 3400. He has more experience, but either one would have made a good board member.

Silver Line Transit loss split geographically (0.00 / 0)
Policy-wise, the most interesting aspect was how the Grand Rapids southeast side, East Grand Rapids and eastern Kentwood all backed the millage.  This geographic concentration suggests a solid community-focus, useful for the upcoming battle for the Senate seat.

School Board Race tight in GR (0.00 / 0)
But the two big winners, incumbent Tony Baker and newcomer Wendy Falb were both endorsed by the party.  And both won going away, each with more than half the total vote.

GREA-backed candidate, Kevin Weiss lost in a very narrow race to Senita Lenear, a black conservative.  There's history here, but the strong African American support coupled with backing from some historically Republican precincts were enough to give her a 100 point win.
