Diesel Pollution - Michigan's Silent Killer

by: lilpiston

Mon Feb 15, 2010 at 17:24:37 PM EST

Anyone that has been stuck behind a diesel truck in traffic or stood on the side of the road as one has passed by can recognize the black smoke and horrible smell associated with diesel vehicles.

Right now, diesel emissions from trucks, buses and construction vehicles are poisoning our water and the air we breathe.  Diesel exhaust causes a number of health problems, including lung disease, heart disease and a cancer risk that is 7 times higher than the combined risk of all the 181 air toxics tracked by the EPA.

In Michigan alone, in 2010, diesel pollution is estimated to cause the early deaths of 443 people, more than 15,000 asthma attacks, 648 non-fatal heart attacks, and over 57,000 work loss days.

To see the health risks associated with diesel pollution where you live check out: http://www.catf.us/projects/diesel/dieselhealth/

In addition to the health risks associated with dangerous diesel pollution, it is also a large contributor to global warming.  The black carbon that spews from diesel vehicles is 2000 times more potent as a greenhouse gas pollutant than the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide.

BUT, there is a solution to diesel pollution, diesel particulate filters (DPFs) can be installed on diesel vehicles and reduce the amount of pollution from the vehicle by 90%.

By working to reduce diesel pollution we can produce health benefits - for every $1 spent on reducing diesel pollution there is a $12 health benefit.  In addition, for every $1Billion spent on reducing diesel pollution 19,000 jobs can be created, good-paying jobs that can be grown here in Michigan!  There are only 12 companies in North America that are verified by the EPA to manufacture DPFs and 2 of those companies are located in Michigan.

Federal funds exist through the Diesel Emission Reduction Act (DERA) and Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) to help clean-up dirty diesel vehicles.

The Michigan Legislature needs to act now to pass comprehensive legislation that would protect public health, reduce the effects of climate change and create good-paying Michigan jobs.

Further, the Granholm Administration needs to take administrative action to take advantage of the available federal funds to clean-up the State's fleet of diesel vehicles.

The time to act is now!  Michigan lives and jobs are at stake.

God I hate sucking in those toxic diesel fumes.   When I worked in southwest Detroit a few years back it made me sick--literally--to see hundreds of diesel trucks a day descending from the Ambassador Bridge and driving through neighborhoods, past schools, leaving behind killer pollution.

sounds like a win-win (0.00 / 0)
It's shocking to hear about how dangerous diesel pollution is.  I can't believe we are all exposed to these toxic fumes every day!  And, to think there is a solution made right here in Michigan.  This sounds like another green job opportunity we should be capitalizing on.  What's stopping our state's leaders from acting?

No joke, let's get this done (0.00 / 0)
I had no idea that the numbers were that high. We really don't have to wait until they retire those old fleets. Our state should take advantage of these opportunities to retrofit and clean up diesel emissions.
