Out with the new, in with the old

I was going to stay mostly away from the Democratic nomination race in the 3rd District. As I've mentioned before, my best friend Steve Coon is Steve Pestka's communications guy, and they're also doing a sponsorship here shortly. And, because the content on this site really isn't up for sale, I try when possible to avoid situations where people might start raising questions that it is. However, after seeing this awful hulk of a story show up in my Inbox this morning with the towering subject line, "BREAKING: Could Trevor Thomas have 'a substantial lead' over Steve Pestka?" (the embedded link goes to a story in the Grand Rapids Press, not a Thomas campaign press release), I feel the need to, well, share some observations.

The first is that the news story is really a repackaged press release built around a push poll. If you've ever covered a political race, you've seen these sorts of press releases before. They are always intended to put the campaign's strongest foot forward, so when the Thomas campaign releases a "memo" from a paid consultant saying that if he raises enough campaign cash he can move into the lead, what it's really saying is that he's behind in the polls and needs money. If he was actually ahead in the polls, you'd see headlines like the one that Hansen Clarke's campaign released a couple of weeks ago that had him ahead of Gary Peters. What you have is "Trevor Thomas could move into the lead if more people give him money." No shit, Sherlock.

The second is one I first noted the other day, that based on endorsements this is swiftly becoming a race between the up-and-comers and the has-beens. In this case, the has-beens are behind the younger candidate. Go figure. To sum up, Steve Pestka's campaign this week rolled out an endorsement by Jocelyn Benson the day after a campaign event with Gretchen Whitmer. Whitmer endorsed early on. Yesterday, Thomas rolled out its endorsement by John Cherry, who it ought to be remembered couldn't seal the deal on a gubernatorial nomination waiting for him to do nothing more than redeem his ticket stub. He's also got the endorsement of Jennifer Granholm, who after leaving office also left the state and is now more or less just a media figure.

In fact, let's just take this a step further. To me, it appears that the Thomas campaign has all the substance to it of a marshmallow. Their message, to me, appears to be, "I'm fabulous, have cool friends, and my opponent is a boring, old fart. Give me money and I'll make music." That's great, except that it's not a real political campaign. It's an episode of Glee. Better yet, it's a Democratic, Congressional, less sexually harassing version of Herman Cain's campaign for president. New technology and media are great and all, but substituting them for an actual organization and shoe leather campaigning is a proven loser. Further evidence? The Madonna Vogue award giveaway (yet another has-been to add to the collection). To put it another way, I've now received two solicitations for donations this morning based on the same piece of free media, and I think another two in the last week.

Finally, I know Mark Brewer is supposed to play nice and all with all of the party's factions, and that some of the factions are still loyal to the people who won the governor's race a decade ago (quick note here on the efficacy of relying on has-beens ... Democrats tried this in Minnesota after Paul Wellstone's death by trotting out dinosaur Walter Mondale and were rewarded for it when Al Franken took the seat back from Mark Dayton six years later). I realize that Justin Amash is a terrible, unpopular representative, but it's still West Michigan. Jennifer Granholm, Madonna, and John Cherry aren't going to win you a seat in Congress from it. And, if it comes down to a matter of money, Dick DeVos and Lil' Fella's parents bought this seat for him once, and they've got deeper pockets than Trevor Thomas' e-mail list.

Update! ... Apparently, modern journalism means doing a story on every development in a campaign. That means doing a story on the release of a push poll tied to a fund raising campaign, and then doing a story on the reaction. One of the last paragraphs from the reaction story, which you can take with an appropriate grain of salt since it's a psuedonymynous MLive poster.

“It started off like an objective survey, but when it got to the part of asking if I thought favorably of Thomas, instead of simply asking the question, the guy read an incredibly long and detailed account of Thomas' glowing attributes,” Jaster2 wrote. “I started laughing. It was just silly. Note to Thomas campaign: tactics like this don't build trust or enthusiasm for your candidate.

"I'm happy to get behind an underdog who has the goods. Maybe your guy does. This push poll was not a good introduction to your guy.”

Mark Mellman, who conducted the push poll, also did polling for Jennifer Granholm back in the day and has been on her Current TV show at least once. So, there is that. Keep in mind, also, that the results of this push poll -- that with huge infusions of cash, Trevor Thomas can win the race -- were strapped to two fund-raising e-mails.  In other words, he can win if he raises enough money ... so give him money!

Again, I really don't want to spend a lot of time commenting on this race because there are reasons to ask whether it's objective; but, misrepresenting another candidate in a push poll designed for fund raising crosses a line that warrants rebuke.

I don't live in the 3rd,
but this race comes up in conversations with political people around the state.  Several of my LGBT activist friends are pulling for Trevor, and that's fine, it's just the way I keep seeing Trevor supporters go about it that bugs.

For instance no one ever tells me me WHY Trevor is the better candiate, they just start out conversations with things like "OMG, how can Gretchen Whitmer say she stands up for Choice and Vaginas and stuff when she's supporting an ANTI-choice candidate in the 3rd!!!!"

or

"Pestka is only getting support because he said he'll self-fund in the general!!!!"

At this point I just tell people that the chances of the MI-3 being on the DNC's target list are pretty slim so I'm not going to waste a lot of thought on their Primary battle.  And any political donation $ I scrounge up this year that doesn't go to local candidates and taking back the MI House will probably go up to Gary McDowell because I think we have a better shot at taking Dr. Benishek down than Justin Amash.  But that's just my opinion.

Depending on how the Primary goes MI-11 could also be a good investment....
Particularly if it comes down to Dr. Syed Taj vs. Crazy Tea Party Reindeer-Herder (that even L. Brooks cannot stand).

Steve Pestka, if I have his position correct, doesn't personally believe in abortion but believes that Roe v. Wade is settled law. Welcome to a perfectly mainstream pro-choice position.

Or, put another way, there's probably a reason why Gretchen Whitmer endorsed and is campaigning for him. It may be that a campaign willing to release a highly deceptive push poll as part of a fund raising drive is willing in other areas to be less than forthright with the truth.

As for this race, if I understand things correctly, Lil' Fella really is a very unpopular member of Congress in the district.  They took away some of his most conservative places and gave him more liberal ones.  Plus, the district's Republicans reportedly don't like him much, and neither does the business community.  So, he's potentially very vulnerable.  In a general election contest, your mastery of the Internet or ability to get celebrities to give you schwag to give out to donors isn't going to matter nearly as much as your ability to put together a ground operation.  All those union endorsements that Thomas has disparaged as being part of dinosaur politics? Those represent a field army.
