| The phrase, "credibility gap" comes to mind whenever Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero says he didn't insult someone's gender/sexual orientation/ethnicity. Bernero had his own mini-scandal erupt earlier this year, when he referred to an opponent of his casino plans as "Chief Chicken Little." Bernero denied Washington's accusation. "I don't know what she's talking about. This is hearsay and innuendo," he said. "I'd suggest you get your facts straight." One thing leads to another. He also apparently referred to Washington's predecessor as a piece of shit at some point, too. All things being equal, I'm beginning to wonder whether the Democrats really did themselves any favors by nominating this guy as their standard bearer in 2010. I realize that wasn't the point, the point was to prevent an Andy Dillon candidacy from leading to changes internal to how the state Democratic Party operates (i.e. it might have modernized), but still. By the way, from the City Pulse article on this. “I’ll remind my colleagues, respectively, I’m very excited when anyone wants to come invest in the city,” Bernero said. “We don’t have a whole lot of people beating down the door right now who want to invest in the city. I certainly don’t want to send the wrong message. … Deals can fall apart — they can languish and financing can dry up in a tough economy. If there’s an obstacle, I’d like to know about it.”
Two years ago, in the primary race, it was all about "cranes in the sky" over Lansing. Now, all of a sudden, no one wants to invest in Lansing. |
