Detroit News editorial page thinks Harry Reid is running for president

by: Eric B.

Sat Aug 04, 2012 at 10:47:18 AM EDT

Also, whoever wrote today's editorial doesn't understand slander.

... That's a slanderous accusation that Reid knows is baseless. We agree that the Republican presidential nominee should produce more returns, if only to put an end to such spurious speculation. But what's good for Romney is good for Reid. ...

Why does the Detroit News want to see the tax records for Harry Reid, a senator from Nevada who isn't running for nationwide office (i.e., the News will never be one of his constituents)? The answer is pretty obvious. The Detroit News is less intererested in exploring someone's fitness for office and is more interested in seeing the issue muddled because the target of inquiry is a Republican. Hence, this really juvenile*, "I'm rubber and you're glue" editorial.

*--This comment made with 30 percent more sheer rancid bile and spite than previous comments made about the intellectual quality of Detroit News editorials.

Reid
I'd been critical of Reid in the past for what I viewed as almost a reflexive ability to be rolled by his opposition, but ever since his knock-down, drag-out fight with (and defeat of) Sharron Angle, I think he realized he had to play hardball.  What Reid did the other day was nothing short of genius, and I know this because the media went batshit crazy.  He took a Rovian Republican tactic (baselessly or seemingly baseless speculating and rumormongering about an opponent who is the only one that can put the speculation to rest), and turned it right around on them.  Since he's not running for anything, this has the effect of keeping the president at a distance, while opening another on Romney.  This is just good politics whatever you think of the ethics of it.  Finally, the Dems are learning as the president said to not bring a knife to a gunfight.  'Bout damned time.

Also, when you complain about the messenger, it looks like you're afraid there's something to hide
A. The News ran, in my opinion, one of the pettiest editorials I've seen published anywhere in a very long time. And, that includes smalltown dailies where you expect petty, small-minded editorials to appear.

B. By attacking the messenger is such clumsy, amateurish fashion, it makes it look like they think there's something to the issue, even if it's not that he didn't pay taxes for 10 years. If they thought it was just dumb, they wouldn't rise to the bait of one of Nevada's two senators.

After
After literally years of "show us the birth certificate", I'm just glad they are getting a taste of their own medicine.  Turnabout's fair play, after all.

Is that petty of me?  Probably.  But, now they'll know how we feel.  I doubt they'll care (they are about as far from self-reflective as a group can get), but I already got my satisfaction out of this.

"Show us the taxes", Willard.

Reid and Taxes
Your defense of Reid misses the mark. Although this person is not running for President he does hold a very important post in our government almost equal to the President. As such he is responsible to the nation as a whole and not just Nevada.

A national vetting of such and individual and an accounting for the large amount of funds tender him by who is relevant.

It is no wonder that your most ardent reader (Lipan) resides in the dark most times. Maybe we can blame it on ALEC.
