Ruth Johnson is a terrible Secretary of State

by: Eric B.

Mon Aug 13, 2012 at 14:43:37 PM EDT

When it comes to administering elections, the first and primary duty of the Secretary of State is to do so without causing widespread confusion. Last Tuesday, Ruth Johnson failed to do that with last-minute instructions to county clerks that were followed by more instructions that were so last minute they came when the election was under way. Ruth Johnson failed in her primary duty as Secretary of State. Ruth Johnson says she's awesome.

Why add the citizenship question in the first place? To uphold the law and to protect anyone who inadvertently registered to vote from potentially committing a felony by giving one last reminder not to vote if not eligible.

She claims this didn't cause confusion, except that it did. We linked to Rich Robinson's Op-Ed piece yesterday, which Johnson appears to be taking the unique task of personally rebutting without naming him, in which he said he didn't vote because the question lacked any clear statutory authority to ask. Ruth Johnson said she had to ask it to presumably prevent illegal immigrants from voting, something which doesn't happen. In other words, Ruth Johnson failed to do her first and primary job because she was busy worrying about a non-existent problem.

By the way, Kent County's prosecutor said the Legislature ought to make it illegal to pay someone to take a dive in an election, which is what Jase Bolger and Roy Schmidt were guilty of doing. Kent County's prosecutor called it a case of genuine election fraud. Why isn't Ruth Johnson spending more time pressuring the Legislature to adopt a law that would make paying someone to take a dive in an election a crime, rather than worrying about problems that don't exist?

Ummm...
to protect anyone who inadvertently registered to vote

Excuse my French, but WTF?

I tell you, when I went to vote, this slightly confused me.  I like to think I'm up on the political process, but I'd forgotten about this, and couldn't remember if this question had always been on the sign-in form.  I went ahead and marked it, anyway, but I could see how this could cause serious confusion.

God, it hurts that Benson lost.  And, to think, Ruth overaw elections in Michigan's second most populous county.

"Ruth over[s]aw elections in Michigan's second most populous county."
And as a resident of said county, I think she did a better job as Oakland County Clerk than she has so far as Secretary of State, at least so far.  I got faster results from the AP than I did from the SOS this time, for starters, while Oakland County's site was exemplary in terms of speed and detail of reporting.  It's certainly better than Wayne County's!

Highly partisan clerk
Actually wasn't that good a county clerk compared to Washtenaw County, where the first Democratic Party clerk in 72 years really modernized the place. Wayne County isn't a fair comparison; money for one thing.

And don't forget that all the Oakland results under Johnson were "Democrat Party" [sic].

I've also lived in Washtenaw County
I've met Mr. Kestenbaum and had the pleasure of applying for a marriage license there--and it really was a pleasure.  It beat taking out a license in Los Angeles County, where I got married the first time.

As for Johnson being highly partisan, I know.  I can't get her out of office this year, but I have already started volunteering for Lisa Brown to unseat Bullard, who replaced her.
