I was at Kelly-Shorts Stadium here in sunny Mt. Pleasant last night watching Central Michigan squeak past perennial Division II powerhouse Southeast Missouri State, and as such missed Willard's speech last night in Tampa. Someone sent me a link this morning of what I think might be it.
The keen, sterile intellectual side of me says that there isn't much a president can do to fix what's really wrong. The other side of me says that Mitt Romney embodies what happens when people believe that. Most of us grew up being taught -- in my case, by my public school teachers -- to believe in an America where anyone can get ahead if they work hard and play by the rules. You might not get stinking, filthy rich but you'll share in the bounty and wealth created in part by your own hand. You won't have a third or fourth home or an elevator for your cars, but you'll be able to take nice vacations with your family and sock a little cash away so's your kids will someday have it even better. I can say with a little certainty that we no longer live in that America and the party responsible for making it so ain't big, bad gubmint.
