| I was a Clint Eastwood fan before I even understood what movies are. Then, in the early 80s, I was delighted to learn that he was running for mayor of Carmel, Calif., as a Republican because, dude, Republicans were cool in those days. Then, I grew up. I'm an even bigger fan of his most recent films, while preferring to look elsewhere for guidance on how to think about political issues. It’s a shame that a man with so much to be proud of in his career will now be remembered for this 15-minute episode. It’s even a bigger shame that the opponents of Romney are turning a good man into an object of derision to score political points.
No one, of course, forced Clint Eastwood to go before a national audience and debate an empty chair. That was entirely his own choice. Nolan Finley, speaking from the perspective of the Party of Personal Responsibility, thinks it's a damn shame that people are judging him for the results of his own choice. You wonder how it is that we have a House Speaker who can be accused in clear text by a member of his own party of conspiring to commit election fraud and hasn't done the honorable thing and stepped aside, and then you read something like this and get your answer. |
