| If I were Ruth Johnson, I'd take this as very softshoed criticism of my redundant question about citizenship on ballot applications. Confusion best describes the situation Michigan voters face in the November general election. Not so much over the candidates or issues on the ballot, but by the confusing question of declaring U.S. citizenship, now caught up in the ethical and legal questions raised by both elections officials and critics who have recently filed a federal lawsuit opposing the action.
This is confusion created by the state's Secretary of State, who happens to be by way of that also it's chief elections officer. She created by insisting that it is within her power to ask a question on ballot applications what voters have to already answer when they apply to register to vote in the first place. In response to criticism that it had created unneccessary confusion, she called critics "Chicken Littles." This is the head of the state's Department of Civil Rights acknowledging that the Secretary of State's question has created a good deal of confusion around the state. |
