You gutless progressives make me sick

by: Eric B.

Thu Oct 11, 2012 at 18:55:07 PM EDT

It's been a week since the disaster in Denver. I've been waiting, these last couple of days, for the president to fucking concede the election. He might still be leading in most polls, but it only took one torpedo to not only sink the ship, but to take the entire fleet to the bottom.

My problem with progressives primarily is that they appear to believe that simply being right on the issues is enough to win, that Mother Jones' quote is really, "Pray for the dead, the living will have it comparatively better off." That should be the case, but sunshines we live in the real world and not the one we ought to live in. The closest thing we have to that perfect world is a little place called Miranda, and the less said about it the better, Mmmkay?

No one was ever going to coast to victory. Four years ago, the Obama people flooded the sky, so to speak. You could walk from Detroit to Menominee on the fuckers. They were there, registering new voters, rousing the ground forces, and even after the election was conceded they were telling people to flip the fucking ballot and vote for Diane Hathaway.

Today, it appears that people are banking on the fact that no one will want to vote for Willard Romney, who is a living, breathing testament to ambition with feet. He has no core beliefs, which contrary to what everyone wishes was the case, is no disqualifier for the presidency. Contrary to that, it's what gave us Dick Nixon, who understood that coming up short in brains, talent and ability was no sound reason why a red blooded American boy couldn't grow up to be president.

Four years ago, those people ran -- and ran fucking hard -- from before the convention to the finish line. And, this was a race they knew all along they were probably going to win. The last week we've seen something different. Willard attacked Big Bird, which should have been a self-inflicted knockout blow by a man who appears to not understand a whole lot about the country he wants to run. Instead, everyone crawled inside their own portable holes, pulled the tops over their heads, and appeared to declare the race over in favor of the other guy.

By the way, the bleeding has apparently stopped. The huge lead gifted to you by an incompetent candidate -- who, by the way, is so terrible and unlikeable that his own running mate called him Stench -- hasn't entirely evaporated. Despite the handicap of still being ahead, you can still win this. You're going to actually have to do something other than roll over and play dead at the first sign of trouble.

Nate Silver gives Obama a 66% chance today.
Obama had been in the 90's.

"You're going to actually have to do something other than roll over and play dead at the first sign of trouble."
Speaking of rolling over and playing dead, Obama did just that in the first debate. If he loses the election, it will be entirely his fault, not that of the "professional left" that the president's inner circle despises.

Bravo for utterly proving Eric's core point.

When did this site turn into Daily Kos?
Over there, the front-pagers are Obama cheerleaders who still have a hard time admitting he stunk out the place last week in Denver. His performance was on a par with Ford in the "Poland is not under Soviet domination" debate in 1976 (or Valverde in Game 4 of the ALDS).

And for the record, Obama's wretched performance didn't affect my vote: he lost it a long time ago for a long list of reasons.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

This is a very easy question
I'm not going to let the perfect be the enemy of the good, or even the preferable.  Obama is guilty of much of the same "Collapse at first push-back" spinelessness that plagued Jennifer Granholm's gubernatorial administration, but I do have to admit that Granholm, even at her most craven, was preferable to Amway Guy as governor. The same goes with Obama and the ambition-fueled animatronic Ken doll who eventually slithered out of the Republican nominating process. In our political system, voting for someone other than the less awful of the two major candidates is in fact voting for the most awful.

Thank you Eric B!!
I figured out a long time ago that the point of an election is not to elect the best possible candidate, but to avoid a catastrophe.  A few thousand Ralph Nader voters in Florida didn't get the message in 2000.  Anybody still remember how that one turned out?  Remind me again how many Americans came back from Iraq in body bags?  Thank goodness Hy does NOT live in Ohio or Florida or Colorado!
