| There was a candidate forum in the U.P. Thursday night, featuring a handful of Republicans and Democrats for the state House and Gary McDowell (Dan Benishek gave it a miss). Ed McBroom: "We know in this country right now, we have many statistics that women are more than ever reaching high-powered positions, more than ever earning more money than they have before," said Ed McBroom (R), 108th District Representative. He's right, when you think about it. If you have 10 bananas, and give three to someone else; and then get 10 more bananas and give another three to that same person, they have more bananas. And, I know what you're thinking, because Sharon Gray, his Democratic opponent, pointed out that merely having more bananas isn't the same as having an equal number of bananas. If you were compare the average salary of a woman today versus the average salary of a man from 1890, what you'd find is that women earn more than men; and if you compare the number of women serving in Congress, as high ranking military officers, and as corporate presidents to the number serving in those positions at the time of the Constitution's signing, you'll find that the glass ceiling is as much a phantom as the will o' the wisp pleading for you to go wandering into the swamp. |
