MLive papers think Pete Hoekstra should campaign on his support for coal

by: Eric B.

Mon Oct 29, 2012 at 11:01:47 AM EDT

Filed under, "Newspaper endorsements are like a bad relationship that you should get out of, but won't because it's so comfortable."

It comes as a surprise to learn that Hoekstra feels the key to Michigan’s economic revival is making sure the state has low-cost energy available, including the use of coal and natural gas. Hoekstra feels that’s the only way manufacturing can grow and succeed in the state. His argument has merit, and it should be central to his message, rather than the focus on Stabenow’s record.

Say nothing that the cost of coal energy is no longer low, and say nothing about how one of the papers involved -- the Bay City Times -- should know this since they had a major coal plant expansion scheduled for their backyard canceled due to cost projections. Instead, say much about how the endorsement registered surprise that a Republican would endorse coal and natural gas energy. We don't just live in interesting times. We live in ignorant times.

It all sounds terrific. The problem is that the country is using its credit card to pay for spending. The trillion-dollar overspending seen each year in the federal budget has to stop, and Stabenow doesn’t have a plan for that other than to tax high-income earners at a higher rate. It simply isn’t enough.

Not only are these three MLive papers unaware that Republicans generally support coal and natural gas energy, but they are apparently unable among the three of them to muster up someone who understands how a basic budget works. Or, who's taken a look at charts about the cause of the national debt, a leading cause of which are the so-called Bush tax cuts that MLive is criticizing Stabenow for wanting to repeal ... while delivering their tongue lashing over her "unseriousness" regarding deficit spending.

By the way, if you read the whole thing their criticism of Hoekstra is over his campaign strategy, that he spends too much time criticizing an incumbent who's always been good at campaigning. It's not so much that I disagree with the editorial choice of Hoekstra over Stabenow (I do), it's that their endorsement appears to be written by someone who understands neither politics nor policy.

You know
You know what burns me up about this?  The laziness and the shallowness of the endorsement.  I can get an ideological paper like the Detroit News endorsing someone as crappy a politician as Hoekstra out of pure ideological loyalty with their ten-dollar words and "Very Serious People" speak.  But, this endorsement is offensive in its sloth and carelessness.  It's not even a conservative vs. liberal thing; it's about respecting your readers and something this poorly put together is like a middle finger to the reader.  It reminds me of the LSJ's recent endorsements at the state house level.  Just plain lazy and half-assed.  And, papers wonder why they aren't worth the paper they are printed on, anymore.

They gave points to Hoekstra because Stabenow wouldn't debate him
It's almost as if no one involved in this endorsement has ever covered an election before. Or knows anything about politics. Or has been out of college longer than two years.

But, you know, no one in energy circles is talking about coal energy right now. It's gotten too expensive compared to the alternatives.

This is the Flint paper we're talking about, too. Flint, one of the state's major cities. This isn't an endorsement from a podunk weekly or a university student paper. This is supposed to be a serious endorsement editorial and, you're right, they did a great disservice to their readers with it.

Pathetic indeed
"The country must move away from huge government spending on stimulus programs, war and a policy of short-term budgeting by default."
-Hoekstra supported Iraq War.

"The most pressing issues right now are tax reform, taming federal spending and generating some new energy in Congress to end an environment of political gridlock."
-Stabenow's farm bill was one of the great bipartisan achievements in recent years and it cut federal spending.

"Stabenow deserves credit for working with Republicans to pass a five-year farm bill and craft legislation to battle Asian carp. However, the farm bill has not passed the House of Representatives, and there's little controversy when it comes to keeping the carp out of the Great Lakes."
-So, Stabenow deserves credit for doing exactly what they are saying needs to be done. The farm bill has not passed the House of Representatives because Hoekstra's GOP friends are in charge. And a simple Google News search disproves the notion that there's 'little controversy' about the Asian Carp problem.

The rest is just more pablum. MiddleGrandGuy is right. This isn't even ideologically disgusting. It could have come from a lazy high schooler as a journalism class project.

Honestly
Why won't someone worth there salt just come out and say the obvious, which is that nothing is passing both houses because the House's practice for the last two years has been to completely shut down legislation initiated in the Senate?  How in the world are they going to blame Stabenow for the intrasigence of the House?  This is classic "why do you keep hitting yourself" as the bully takes your own hand and hits you with it.
