| Cowards do their best work when no one is watching. LANSING — Michigan’s lame duck Legislature got darts and laurels this morning after a final-day session that lasted more than 18 hours in which they hastily passed laws related to taxes, abortion, elections, Detroit lighting, a regional transportation authority for southeast Michigan, and emergency managers for distressed cities and school districts, among other measures.
By now, you know one of those "other measures" is making it more difficult to recall an elected official. In other words, while you slept, the Republican state Legislature whittled away at your ability to hold elected officials accountable for their actions. The entire thing reminds of me of the old Simpsons episode "Brother from the Same Planet," in which Homer is fist fighting with Bart's "Bigger Brother" Tom. It starts at an aquarium and winds up in antique store. You hear a bunch of crashing dishes as Tom stands outside. It's Homer, inside and smashing antiques on the ground for no reason. That's what the lame duck session feels like to me. |
