What's the deal with Rep. Olumba's decision?

by: Michael McGuinness

Wed Feb 20, 2013 at 15:14:51 PM EST

I am confused by State Representative John Olumba's stated rationale for leaving the House Democratic Caucus.

The Democrats' current Vice Chair on the House Appropriations Committee is Rashida Tlaib, Democrat from Detroit. The previous Democratic Chair of the House Appropriations Committee was George Cushingberry, Jr., Democrat from Detroit.

Mr. Olumba himself is the current Vice Chair for the Oversight Committee, although he is in his second term. Some third term House Democrats have no Vice Chair position.

David Nathan, Democrat from Detroit, is Vice Chair for Financial Services Committee. Harvey Santana, Democrat from Detroit, is Vice Chair for the Military and Veterans Affairs Committee. Thomas Stallworth, Democrat from Detroit, is Vice Chair for Energy and Technology Committee.

David Rutledge is Vice Chair for the Local Government Committee. Rudy Hobbs is Vice Chair of Government Operations. Stacy Oakes is Vice Chair of Criminal Justice.

Is this sour grapes about Committee Assignments? Or is there a backstory that isn't being shared with the general populace?

Apart from Mr. Schmidt, when is the last time a member of the House Democratic Caucus switched parties or went Independent?

Recent Belle Isle deal fall threw, he must be one of those crazies that show up at the city council meeting, least that is by first take.

Recall of Mayor Bing.
He did lead an effort to recall Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, but I don't see that he connection to the Belle Isle management question to the House Democratic Caucus?

FYI … For what it is worth ...
... From: State Rep. John Olumba, February 27, 2013, "Night Shift Detroit"  First Shift with Tony Truipiano

"... I'm looking at 700,000 people disenfranchised from Tax Policy.  Now Tax Policy, by the way, is THE most important committee in Lansing besides Appropriations and guess what:

The City of Detroit is the most heavily taxed municipality in the state, in the United States.

We have maxed out of every bond.  We can't issue any more bonds.  That's why they keep coming up with these new authorities.  If you notice, all last year they were moving legislation to create new authorities, that's so we can get more bonding capacity so that they can continue to load debt onto the people of the City of Detroit.  We are overtaxed.

They came up with study was the other day that said that people are paying property taxes that are 18 times higher than what they should be.

We got mileages up the wha-zoo.  And the point is, if we are paying that much money in taxes, than anybody in the state, there are no Detroiters on Tax Policy, that's probably why."

"In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." - George Orwell

Thank you.
I saw you relay that in another comment thread, as well. It was a powerful statement that I hadn't seen from him before, so I very much appreciate you sharing more context regarding his decision.

Is there any resource that you know of off-hand that would offer a breakdown of the various taxes that exist upon the city residents, employers, employees?

Aren't some of them self-determined and self-imposed (which certainly doesn't take into immediate account as to what conditions led to the perceived need for their imposition)?

Great Lakes, Great Times.
